Across The Salish Sea Blues: Monday, January 27th

A fellow of mediocre talent will remain a mediocrity, whether he travels or not; but one of superior talent (which without impiety I cannot deny that I possess) will go to seed if he always remains in the same place. -Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, composer and musician (1756-1791)

Hi Raymond!

Glad to hear that Sylvia is on the mend. I gather that you don't know whether Arthur has been approved for a transplant. Is that correct? Again, a very, very difficult situation.

Alex sounds like something I'd be keen to read. Have a vague suspicion that I have heard something about it but can't think where, at the moment. Perhaps a review you passed along.

Great results for UBC Rugby. Was this in conjunction with pro circuit? I gather that UBC is revisiting funding around all of its collegiate sports teams. All a question of finances.

With respect to Downton, for my part, I am enjoying some of the latest twists and turns. We watched Sherlock which plays immediately after and I certainly find Benedict Cumberbatch's characterization most interesting.

Up early as scads to do to get ready to leave. Hope to catch 12:30 ferry and then ride from HB. Have to pick up the Millionaires at Nanaimo Airport so plan is to have me take Grogg's car there and then have them drop me at Departure Bay where I will meet Cora Lee and her parents. Gather there is heavy fog in Vancouver but I should be fine by about 2:00 pm, I should think. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Looks like early Island flights cancelled, but ours till shows on time. Will call or email when we get over to the gate with an update around 8:30AM. What's your timing like today, ie staying tonight, or wanting to get back? Cheers, Grog

    Hi Grogg!

Welcome back to the Land of Fog! I just looked at flight info myself and see you are scheduled in at 10:07 am.

We'd certainly like to see you and have a catch-up visit but we have to try for the 12:30 pm ferry. Cora Lee has Book Club tonight and tomorrow is Clarisse's 89th birthday. Cora Lee has planned a party with eleven or so, so we need to be back in order to get ready for that.

Given our timing, we have decided that I'll drive your car to airport, gang will head to Departure Bay. If you could drop me off there that would be grand. Always something. Nevertheless, we've had a most enjoyable stay and it will be hard to leave Madroña Manor and resident feline, Cimcky The King! Not to mention wonderful cycling!!! Will chat when you call and then later in car. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Looks like flights are getting out OK now . Earlier Nanaimo and Victoria were delayed, but have now left. So, hopefully will only get better and we can get out on time. Even if delayed a 1/2 hour or hour, can still get you to 12:30PM ferry...
    Cheers, Grog

Should be boarding in a few minutes Hope we can land in nanaimo! G

    Hi Corinne,

This tour group looks good too.  We’d be interested in 6 weeks.  You may want to stay on longer, but that time would be about optimum for us. That should allow us to have a good look at perhaps three different regions of India.

When do you get home from the Island?  I have to make a day trip to Vancouver on Sunday Feb 2 for a memorial service for my aunt.  I’m going to fly down in the morning, attend the 2 PM service in West Van, then fly home on a 10:30 PM flight.  If it would work for you, I could come and cadge dinner and we could do some trip planning. Cheers from sunny but not hot Florida, Peter

Hi Peter, we are going home today. Feb. 2 will be fine. Let us know if you need a pick up from anywhere. Too bad Lynnie wasn't coming as well. See you soon!

Hi, all,  Attached are the 2 photos taken by Chuck with my little Fuji. That was a great visit with a small portion of the Durston clan. Thanks for your photos. Your camera does a good job, Patrick. Come back any time! Love, Barb and Chuck

Pat, If you want to borrow 'Alex', I should be finished tonight or tomorrow and it has another 2 weeks before it's due. Must warn you, it's extremely dark and violent. Ray                                          Hi Raymond!

Thanks very much for the offer of Alex. I simply won't have time to read it in the next two weeks, (Have my own Book Club selection and Kurt, from Book Club, left me a draft of his first novel that he'd like me to read and give him my opinion!), but I'll ask Cora Lee is she is interested. If so, I'll let you know tomorrow. She is at her Book Club this evening. One of the reasons we returned today.

All went well at Madroña Manor, in terms of packing up, etc. I drove Grogg's car to the airport and then they dropped me off at Departure Bay. (They enjoyed themselves but said they had a few cool days. Friends in Florida for six weeks say it is sunny but not hot.) I had about an hour and a half to spare so I read. When it was close to boarding time I walked to Departure Berths and was quite amazed at the number of walk-on passengers. I ended up talking with a chap who had been trying to fly out of Comox for last few days. Had not been able to do so as fog has shut everything down, as far as air travel is concerned. He said there were people in Comox who had already been waiting for four days for their flight to Puerto Vallarta. Apparently WestJet has direct flights but nothing is leaving the ground. I gather Victoria is the same. Quite something.

Our ferry was late arriving in Departure Bay and late arriving in Horseshoe Bay as fog necessitated slower sailing. Passengers were warned that fog horns would be sounding every few minutes and they did. Cora Lee sent me a text message once they were aboard. Funnily enough we were sitting on opposite sides of the ferry but almost directly across from each other. Once I'd had a bite to eat, (overlefts), she told me which deck car was on and I went to fetch my bike. I took the elevator to the bottom deck and locked bike to a railing not far from the gigantic doors.

Since I'd been up so early I took a snooze for about an hour once I rejoined gang. Everyone else was reading but I quit enjoyed my cat nap.  As we approached HB we could actually see the coast and the mountains. Rather surprising after all the cotton batten. Took the knapsack I'd brought to carry my thermos, lunch and book, back to the car with them and then said goodbye. We were off the ferry by 2:30 pm and sun was shining so I was pleased. Not much traffic as I fought my way out of HB and once on descent, ran into fog. Stayed with me all the way back. Couldn't see anything on the water when road allows views of English Bay, Lions Gate and Stanley Park. Still, visibility on Marine wasn't bad at all, certainly better than in Parksville and environs!

It's almost exactly 20 km once crests the bridge and sight was something to behold. It was as if the Lions Gate prevented the fog bank from coming further east as it literally stopped to the right of the bridge, completely obscuring everything. Nothing but the forlorn sound of a fog horn from somewhere in the impenetrable whiteness. To the left, all was clear and I could see the tree tops of Stanley Park and both shores of the harbour, almost all the way to the Ironworkers.

Once I was at the bottom of Prospect Point Hill I had close to 23 km on the clock so decided I'd go for 50+ km. Did this by doing one complete circuit and then some extended dipsy-doodles. English Bay was still invisible but Coal Harbour was clear, Canada Place gleaming. Bit of a head wind once I'd rounded Science World but otherwise ride was very pleasant and it was fun being back on familiar territory.  Stats for ride:

Forecast looks to be dry after 12:00 pm so wondering if you are up for a ride. Give me a shout in the morning. I'll probably sleep in until at least 8:00 am.  Cheers, Patrizzio!

PS; Cora Lee just walked in and she is keen to read Alex when you've finished it. Thanks!

Pics: Snapped these two shots shotly after leaving Departure Bay.

P, fog is pretty thick here as well for the past few days. Ray declined a ride on Friday citing pea soup conditions. Not sure if that was about lunch or weather.
PCO was fun -- had some upset wins and some upsetting losses. Might be a recurring theme with this game. Quite a good turn out with host club (Holly) -- putting on a good tourney with simple formula by upping the entry fee. Lotsa folks you would know from Portland and San Fran.

NRBC is scheduled for the 9th at the Islay Inn if that booking remains acceptable to the sisterhood -- and if you ever decide to return to these promiscuous parts. When are you back on the False Creek? Fond regards to all the residents in the Manor of Speaking, W
