Bye Bye Coco Blues: Sunday, January 19th

Just as appetite comes by eating, so work brings inspiration, if inspiration is not discernible at the beginning. -Igor Stravinsky, composer (1882-1971)

Hi Jill! Greetings from Vancouver from Corinne and Patrick and Chloë! All the best. Cheers, Patrizzio!
  • Patrick James Dunn
  • Skopelos International Film Festival for Youth (SIFFY) Yiasou Patrizziou! Many regards to everyone!
    • Patrick James Dunn Hi again, Jill! We are actually on Vancouver Island, (tad larger than Skopelos!), house/cat sitting for friends who are in Nassau for a few weeks. Corinne says hello and sends fond regards, as do I, remembering as we do the wonderful, wonderful time we spent on Skopelos and getting to know you and your family. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Chris!

Trust you are well! Thanks again for the time you spent with us last Tuesday. As well, great tip on Moby Dick's as we had a lovely lunch. Furthermore, Cora Lee brought the salmon you so generously presented us with over to Parksville and we enjoyed it this past Friday. Incredibly tasty so we plan to stop by your office on the 27th. We would normally go to Horseshoe Bay but we've decided salmon was so good we'll go to Tsawwassen! Hope you don't mind emptying your freezer!

On to more mundane matters. I suppose you'll be sending me some figures in the next little while. My total payment for January 1st was regular amount so I assume nothing has changed yet. Anyway, I'll wait to hear from you. Thanks again. Best wishes from Cora Lee. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Snaps: Whiterock; my reaction to my cards during one of our bridge games; relaxing at Madroña Manor after a stressful day!

Hi Tylenol Man!

Glad you are now on house arrest! I think you are making the right choice to follow the hip precautions. My further advice is to be very disciplined about doing the stretching exercises. I made a point to do them twice a day, increasing reps and difficulty as I felt I was getting stronger. Stationary bike was terrific and I could walk over to GI Rec Centre to use one there. also, use a cane. You may not feel you want to do so but it is better for balance and recovery. Grand, grand ride today:

Must away as I'm needed for bridge. All the best, Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Coco and Big Al!

Grand that you two could join us for all the fun and frolics! Trust you had smooth sailing all the way home. After you tow left, (for the second time!), I sent a few messages and then suited up for my ride. Left just after 12:00 and had decided I'd make for the Englishman River Estuary, didpsy-doodling into Rathtrevor Beach Park beforehand, with the idea of then riding to the Falls. Traffic was light so when I was on the Alberni Highway going was still pleasant enough. Once I'd reached the gas station in Errington I took a right onto Grafton Ave with the idea of trying to see if it would take me to Coombs.

Road surface was very good so I sailed along, enjoying the slightly roller-coaster undulations, taking in the new territory and sights. I'd never cycled along here before and it was very interesting to see the various small farms and other "New Age" establishments. One in particular, was quite a stunning Tibetan Buddhist Temple, according to the sign at the driveway. I later learned that it is actually he Kathok Buddhist Meditation Centre, Centre of Clear Light: http://www.kathokcentre.ca/

Something I had never expected to see out of Parksville! Even from the road the grounds and buildings looked rather spectacular so I think place deserves another visit at some point. At any rate I continued along Grafton until I came to Pratt Rd and then turned around. I figured I might well run into Coombs if I followed Pratt but at this point was more interested in making for the Falls so that is just what I did.

Passed some volunteer firemen involved in a training exercise not long after I passed Tiger Lily Farm, a family enterprise offering trail rides as well as having an equestrian centre, but other than that I had the road mostly to myself.

Turned around just before the parking lot at the Falls and then circled back to Errington, passing the same firetruck although it looked like the exercise was over. Once at the gas station I took a right back onto Grafton with the hope that i could discover an alternate route back to Parksville that might avoid travelling on the Alberni Highway. Came pretty close to doing so but missed turning left on Smither Rd just before I encountered the highway. If I'd taken Smithers it would have taken me closer to the intersection of Alberni and Church, thus avoiding much of the busier thoroughfare.

Nevertheless I was very pleased to have "mapped" out this route, from Estuary to Falls, on great roads with a minimum amount of traffic for most of the ride. My heart was high as blazed through Parksville and made for Industrial Way where I took a planned dipsy doodle around Herring Gull Rd before "sneaking" across a quiet Island Hwy E, (Against the light, Dear Reader!), to Northwest Bay Rd and then switched on the autopilot. After a few more dipsy doodles, needed to up final count, I was back at MM just after 4:00 pm. Stats for ride:

Ruthless and Ricardo were back from visiting friends near Nanaimo and gang was watching the Seahawks battle the 49ers. It was close to the end of the 2nd quarter and the Hawks were down. I zapped a cup of java and watched until half time and then had a shower. Changed and refreshed I worked away at my email, popping into the living room to watch key plays and then stayed for the final few, tense minutes. Once the game was over Ruthless and I took on Cora Lee and Rikki Ricardo. We had all the cards and one a quick rubber, Little White playing masterfully. Richard The Grump wasn't happy and kept grizzling all the while.

Broke for dinner around 7:00 pm and Ruth served the simply wonderful Indian meal she had prepared: two delicious chicken curries, red lentil daal and sides of both poppadoms and pita for soppage! Absolutely delicious. Along with a full, full, well rounded 2010 Beringer Knights Valley Cabbage, 14.3%. (We often drive through this valley when making for Sonoma, northwest out of Calistoga, top of Napa, before reaching the Alexander Valley and then Healdsburg.) By the time we had fully enjoyed the meal if was close to 8:30 pm. Everyone helped to clear the table/load the dishwasher and then it was almost time for Downton Abbey.

We all settled in to watch except Ricardo who repaired to the massage chair. The new season of Sherlock came on immediately after DA so we didn't leave our seats until just after 11:00 pm. Busy, busy full day so we said goodnight to one another and made for our bedrooms. R/R had decided not to golf on Monday, (Ruth's vocie is still Minnie Mouse-ish with her laryngitis!), so we plan to play bridge after a lazy sleep-in and then brunch before they depart for the Mainland.

Once again, thanks for all the food, wine and systematic destruction! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Dear Corrine and Patrick,

Belated Happy New Year to you both. Hope all is well. We have just returned from our holiday in Barbados and I am buried in washing, paperwork and household chores - how I hate them all! Had a very relaxing time and great fun catching up with friends over the festive season. Beginning to think about our expected visitors in Chabeuil for this coming summer so do let me know if and when we might see you both when you have finalized your plans.
As you already know Andre is back in Vancouver for his 40th school anniversary reunion over the 24th May weekend and expect him to be away for a month or so. Hopefully not much longer since it is right in the middle of the key growing season for his fruit and vegetables but he will not make his mind up until the last minute as usual so no point me trying to plan ahead for his return. Look forward to hearing your news. Stay safe and take care. Much love, Rosemary XXX
