Moody Cloudy Morning Blues: Monday, February 17th

They know enough who know how to learn. -Henry Adams, historian and teacher (1838-1918)

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am pleased to inform you that I have already make a decision about the book I was so courteously asked to suggest. I would like you to read Bernardo Atxaga’s Obabakoak. However I don’t know if it would be possible to do such thing as I checked VPL and they have just one copy of the lovely book (which is borrowed) whereas in Chapters website there are 3 copys available (I’ve griten to Pulpfiction books asking for it). Do you know anyway we can get enough copys for everyone?  Is my aim unrealistic and I should think in other title?

Keep in touch jon
Jon, Thanks for the selection and I recommend that we stick to it as the title to follow Umbrella. The book may not be available at the library but seems to be elsewhere (I found it at Amazon.ca) -- new and used in paperback format. G

Hi Giorgio!

Thanks very much for notice about Casper's service. I assume you will be attending. Perhaps we can arrange something together as I plan to go to both service and then celebration at VRC.

How did your real estate speculation trip turn out? Some incredible weather so I hope that didn't affect your ferry connections.  With respect to bridge, are you interested in hosting on Tuesday? let me know and I'll drum up players.

Thanks as well for ride on Friday. On way back home I was treated with a a double rainbow over the city as I rode past the totem pole on Kits Point. Probably do a couple of short errand rides today, weather allowing. Cheers, Patrizzio!

P, looks like a good day to ride but I will have to pass. Tuesday I play two concurrent matches. Wednesday might be a good day for me.

Great trip to Galiano in spite of the nasty weather. Will fill ya in on that on our next therapy ride. We just got back that evening before the storm really hit. BC Ferries warned us when we bought our ticket that the sailing may be cancelled...

We can travel together to the service if we do not come from VRC to the service. There is talk of an honorary match before the service. If that happens you can certainly travel back to VRC with us.

I have just asked the government about the availability of Ernie's Silver Cloud lounge for the card snarks tomorrow. Should be fine but will confirm. W

P, I have guvment approval for nefarious gambling activities at the ESC Lounge. W

Hi Pat! Trust 2012 bottling went well. Dinner with a couple of samples sounds pretty good to me! All the best to you and Dave. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Evening on Valentine's Day at Granville Island Market

Hi Patrick, great to be on your blogging email list again...always fun to read about your adventures! Sounds like your Valentine's weekend was fun-filled and entertaining for all of you. We, on the other hand, just stayed home and had a quiet weekend at the winery. Saw a few visitors, but other than that, nothing earth or ear shattering down this way. Dave's still been talking about visiting Vancouver this year, and if he goes so far as to get a Passport, then I'll keep you posted of a possible visit. Enjoy the rest of the Olympics! Pat

Hi again, Pat!

Great if you can visit this year! Keep twisting David's arm!! Looks like we will be cheering for opposite countries in both Women's/Men's hockey. Should be good matches! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Chocolate Covered Viognier Rider!

I agree, Thursday was very warm. Probably but a couple of short errand rides today, weather allowing. Wondering if you might be interested in getting together for a ride this coming Saturday? Forecast looks pretty good. Also, what might be some possible dates for dinner? Let me know and we'll plan accordingly. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Extreme Jenga!

Hi Toshi!

Trust you and your Mother are well! Probably but a couple of short errand rides today, weather allowing. Fondestos to you and Tomiko. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Chocolate Coated/Gold Leaf Burma Traveller!

Really enjoyed hearing about your trip to Burma. Sounds like a fascinating country. Sorry to learn, however, of all your problems on the home-front. What a drag! Glad you are still planning to continue skiing but assume Trev might not be quite as keen after conditions this year. Looking forward to seeing him this coming Wednesday. Probably but a couple of short errand rides today, weather allowing. Fondestos to you and rest of Adelaidians! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Chocolate Coated Iris Colonials!

You forget, Grigor, that we Canucks are colonials as well! Would love to celebrate your 60th in April,as would rest of gang! Your upcoming European junket sounds wonderful. Depending on how things pan out I am very interested in some part of your next year's free riding so keep me posted as plans start to coalesce. In country trips sound very appealing as well. Nice life down under!

Although we have been watching a fair bit of the Olympic coverage, sorry to say we are on wrong side of screen. If you had a two-way TV you'd have seen me vacuuming and dusting, however.
Probably but a couple of short errand rides today, weather allowing. Fondestos to you and Claire The Polar Bear! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Plugged-In Man! For a chap who is so anti-FB you certainly seem wedded to other technology! As well just wondering about message regarding your Father's household possessions. Did you receive my suggestion about Aunt Leah's. Let me know and we'll plan accordingly. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Roma and Leonard!

Trust you are both well and surviving your incredibly harsh winter! For our part we are sweltering in comparison to the rest of most of the country, or UK, for that matter! Fondestos from Cora Lee to you both. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Paolo!  Thanks for dinner invitation! As far as my schedule i concerned, I'm free the weekend of March 14th/15th/16th. Any of those evenings is more than fine by me, as are ones the preceding weekend, should that be a better fit for everyone. Can't speak for Madame Coriandre, however. We are certainly in town but not sure what social/volunteer commitments she might have. Our kitchen calendar doesn't have any dates, so far, for March. I'll ask her to send along a message when she is home this evening. She left at 9:00 am for first round of meetings and won't be home until 7:30 pm. Might as well be still at VPL! All the best to you and Joan. We'll be in touch. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Thanks Patrick - I'll await word from Corrine. We were thinking of also inviting Daphne Wood and Loring. After confirmation from C., I'll run some dates by them to see if any might work at their end given child care responsibilities. Cheers....Paul

Hi again, Paolo!

Be great to have a chance to visit with Daphne. Barely had more than a few words with her at Friends Christmas dinner, and just met Loring that evening, I think! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello to our Favourite Chocolate-Coated Naramatians!

Glad you enjoyed the card and the romantic attention of your Secret Admirer! Not sure if I didn't know, or had forgotten, about your coming trip to Andalusia/Morocco. Never been to the former and but was in Morocco in 1970, eating hash cookies in a flea-bag hotel in Marrakesh! Hitch-hiked, with my girlfriend, Irene, at the time, all the way from Oujda, on the border between Morocco and Algeria, to Tunis. Did it as quickly as some other friends who had a VW bus! Young and stupid. Not much has changed since then but the age component!

All the best to you and malt swilling Jugos Dom Pedro! Coriandre sends Fondestos in Absentia. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Duhlink and Yakkety Yak Madcap!

Trust Madcap let you get a word in edgewise, this time, at least to order something for dinner! Your partner seems to talk too, too much while mine is never around to utter a word. Coriandre left at 9:00 am this morning for first round of meetings and won't be home until 7:30 pm. Might as well be still at VPL! I'll take you out for dinner next time in London and just gaze into your eyes, lips sealed, while you order Champagne and the works! All the best to you and Motor-Mouth Madcap. Guess we've both felt the sharp edge of your tongue, me for interminable messages, MMM for babbling on. You North London babes call a spade a spade and then bop you over the head with it! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Lurch and Grogg! Glad Cimcky enjoyed card! All the best to you three. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Tequila Soaked non-Rider and Crystal Ball Reader!

Great snapolas of Mexico! Too, too bad that you are now back from sun and surf and struggling with path to happiness. Sounds like you may have a viable option so do hope things work out. Not quite sure if you back by this past Thursday but it was very warm, relatively speaking.

Only biking I did today was to give my Trek a thorough cleaning. Robo Man popped by around 3:00 pm to drop off a book he'd borrowed. We chatted for about half an hour and then he set off. We hope to ride tomorrow, weather permitting. You are more than welcome to join us if your schedule allows. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Sun Soaked, Rich and Famous Jet Setters!

Great to know you are living the good life in Hawaii! Then back home to make sure the White Room is carefully packed! Don't think you mentioned a new abode! Back-story please!!!! Let us know about getting together in April as it would be delightful to see you and spend some of the money you obviously have too, too much of! Coriandre sends Fondestos in Absentia. She left at 9:00 am this morning for first round of meetings and won't be home until 7:30 pm. Might as well be still at VPL! Cheers, Patrizzio, Abandoned and without a shred of Consolation except what beckons from malt cabinet!!

Hi Patrick Many thanks for the thought on Valentine's Day- from Jim and Chris.
Best wishes Jim

Hi Chris and Jim!

Glad you enjoyed card! Only biking I did today was to give my Trek a thorough cleaning. Robo Man popped by around 3:00 pm to drop off a book he'd borrowed. He had been by VGH but Arthur was asleep when he arrived so he didn't have a chance to speak to him. We chatted for about half an hour and then he set off. We hope to ride tomorrow, weather permitting. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Patrick, Thank you for your card and email. It seems you and Corrine are keeping very busy.We have not heard too much either from Mark and Krissy. Their work and social lives are keeping them busy too. Mark is suffering from the flu at present. Hopefully it is not a prolonged sickness.

We are busy with our grandsons this week. Tanya has taken a group of students skiing in Austria and we have the boys for the week. Their dad is working.

Weather has been dreadful here with the rain, high tides and wind. Hopefully not much more too come as so many people have been affected by the floods and damage caused. What we would give for some sunshine and warm weather!

It was nice to hear from you. Look after yourselves and all our best wishes to you and Corrine and family. We drank the lovely sparkling Camel red wine at Christmas with Tanya. We really enjoyed it. Also had a bottle with Gayle and Derek. I see they are coming to Canada again later in the year. Not sure what we are up to yet. All our best wishes. Gudrun and Stephen

Hi to our Favourite Chocolate Covered Redruthians!

Glad you enjoyed card! Coriandre sends Fondestos in Absentia, to you both. She left at 9:00 am this morning for first round of meetings and won't be home until 7:30 pm. Might as well be still at VPL! Cheers, Patrizzio, Abandoned and without a shred of Consolation except what beckons from malt cabinet!! Not even a Proper Job to get me there!!!

Hi Pat, How dare you come around my turf and don’t let me know! As it was I was at Jakes soccer game until 11:00 and then had to gather one of his friends from new west and drive them to Grouse mountain for a sideways rain soaked outing. They barely made it down as with the gusting winds they shut down the main skyride and they had to go on the smaller original one between gusts. I suppose they use the smaller one due to less square footage which of course would just be a bigger sail. Sounds like I would have missed you anyway but glad to hear you had a great outing.

Quite funny about the ladies getting ID’d at the fesival! just more evidence of our backwards liquor laws unfortunately. Tomorrows busy so probably can’t get out early at any rate but keep me posted as I do have some more time in the next while and would like to get out. Have a great ride and we’ll talk soon.
Cheers, Al

Hi Big Al!

Quite a story about the lads on the original gondola! Our friend, Joanne, came back early from Victoria on Sunday morning because of the wind warning. On Saturday, Giggster and Kerry went to Galiano. When I asked him about trip this is what he said:

Great trip to Galiano in spite of the nasty weather. Will fill ya in on that on our next therapy ride. We just got back that evening before the storm really hit. BC Ferries warned us when we bought our ticket that the sailing may be cancelled...

Then a message from Marcus Aurelius earlier this evening: "If you were caught out in the wind of Sunday afternoon, you were definitely in it! We had several mighty fir and spruce go down in the gusts here. The Sun reported 'winds up to 90 km/h Sunday evening.'"

You are right about our antiquated liquor laws but I suppose it is to protect us from goofballs who fill balloons with highly explosive gas after they get all hopped up! Sorry for stepping on your turf toes but unless you are around to protect your "hood" someone is definitely going to take it away from you! In the same vein, Marcus has not been riding lately either. Perhaps you two Bunraboids should organize a mini-peloton just to get back in the saddle again! At any rate, I'll keep you in the loop and with any luck we can connect in the not too, too distant future! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Pat, Yes I got your suggestion of Aunt Leah's, and have it in the back of my mind. At present I am still trying to sort out requests from family and friends. Once that smoke has dissipated, I should have some sense of what can passed along to charity...

My bike has been a stranger to me of late, despite any good intentions my rather porous brain might permit these days. We do get regular [daily] lengthy dog-walks in, so I have not devolved into total sluggery...

If you were caught out in the wind of Sunday afternoon, you were definitely in it! We had several mighty fir and spruce go down in the gusts here. The Sun reported "winds up to 90 km/h Sunday evening". 8^) cheers, Mark

Hi Porous Brain Man, Not Entirely A Sluggard!

Please don't worry about Aunt Leah's. I knew you would be very busy so just wanted to make sure message wasn't missed in all the activity I'm sure you are dealing with. If things are left over, great.

Sorry to hear about your trees! With respect to riding, Big Al has not been out lately either. At any rate, I'll keep you both in the cycling loop and with any luck we can connect in the not too, too distant future! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Maggie!

Glad to hear that things have settled down a bit with Alli. Tough situation with your friend, Rachel, as well.  Fortunate for her that you are in town to offer such wonderful, understanding support. With respect to your park, $$$ are always the issue, everywhere! We have our annual strata AGM on Wednesday coming and about 90% of the owners don't want to spend any money on anything!

Go to my dermatologist to have him monitor skin damage for sun exposure. With my fair complexion and growing up in the Mediterranean, can't be too, too careful. Sorry you were not with your Valentine on Friday. Cheers, Patrizzio!

2011 Altocedro Tempranillo Ano Cero - $24.90
"The 2011 Ano Cero Tempranillo is from La Consulta, San Carlos and Uco Valley that is aged for eight months in used barrel. It has a pure bouquet with redcurrant and raspberry, where the oak is well-integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, supple tannins and a structured finish of raspberry and wild strawberry that exhibits impressive persistency. This is a very fine Tempranillo. Drink now-2016. 88 points" - Neal Martin, Wine Advocate #203
2011 Altocedro Cabernet Sauvignon Ano Cero Mendoza - $24.90
"(from 47-year-old vines): Medium red-ruby. Sexy, nuanced aromas of plum, mocha, game and cocoa powder. Sweet, supple and rather suave, with enticing inner-mouth floral perfume lifting the dark fruit and licorice flavors. This will rely as much on its firm acidity as on its ripe tannins for balance and longevity. Offers noteworthy complexity for the price. 88 points"

- Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 13

2010 Altocedro Malbec Reserva La Consulta - $39.90
"(aged for 15 months in new French oak; 15.5% alcohol): Bright full ruby. Precise aromas of black fruits, violet, spices and pepper. Dense, superripe and powerful, with obviously elevated alcohol but solid acidity to leaven the sweetness of the highly concentrated dark berry, chocolate and musky espresso flavors. This very round, outsized malbec finishes with substantial palate-coating tannins and chocolatey oak tones. Impressive wine for fans of the type. 90 points"
- Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 12
