  • Patrick James Dunn Are you trying for an Oscar nomination?
  • Christina Tassell Hi Wayne Sutherland I believe you are the Oscar guru, would you like to inbox me your predictions. I am entering a competition with lots of great prizes which I would be willing to share!!!
  • Patrick James Dunn Sorry, Teens, Sarge has been banned from competition for ten years as he tested positive, last year, had a BAC over the limit for Oscar predictions! Cora Lee is willing to help, however!

Thanks. We are in Chilliwack working an event for the weekend. Talk to you Monday. The shifts are 8 to 330 and 3 to 10. Wayne

    Hi Sarge:

Cora Lee is looking at her schedule and we'll be in touch or wait until Monday.
With respect to Valentine's Day, Cora Lee is ordering four tickets for Festival Under the Bridge, as I scribe. Where are you staying in Chilliwack? I need a long ride today so perhaps I'll cycle out! cheers, Patrizzio!

    Hi Kjell!

Pleased to hear that Anna has been re-patriated. Please pass along fond regards to her from us both. However, sorry to learn that your knee hasn't made a full recovery. Obviously, a worry, as you say. No need to point out that we are of an age when our bodies usually take forever to heal and then, sadly, not better than new! For my part, I'm using a nifty plastic gizmo to put on my socks as I don't have full flexibility to do so on my own/ Robo Man very kinfdly passed along the device. He picked one up to use after his hip surgery. I didn't as I don't usually wear socks. However, I've taken to wearing them during ever since The Polar Vortex has been in town. Cora Lee always puts up a fuss when I've asked her to put them on so I decided I'd better come up with an alternative to Nurse Ratched!

Had a table of bridge this past Wednesday. Admiral Barnacle came for dinner beforehand and then Whirlygig and Theodorakis came along at 7:00 pm or so. Sarge joined us later in the evening, after his meeting was finished. I had organized an almost weekly, rotating session, last year but it fell by the wayside after we left for Europe, last July. Mike Carter is one of regulars but he is in Palm Springs fro a month. Always ood to have a few extra players as someone is usually busy.

On Thursday evening Cora Lee and I went to Tinsel Town to see Nebraska. (Joanne, friend and neighbour, was to join us but Corinne didn't tell her where film was showing, [To be fair, she thought Joanne knew it wasn't at Fifth this week.], and since she said she would meet us in lobby of theatre, we never connected!) Found it very, very moving, wonderfully comic and emotionally painful at times. Filmed in b/w and it showed off US Midwest landscape in all its panoramic, quiet but breathtaking beauty.

I am certainly most impressed with director, Alexander Payne, and his choice of subjects: difficult family situation, depressed economy and its effect on farming in dying, small town America. We don't get enough films which chronicle/record this disappearing way of life. Some of the same feel as The Last Picture Show. Characters are priceless and they grow on you are film progresses. Movie simply unfolds and we begin to understand more and more about the lives of these ordinary people, struggling to cope and care for each other. Some simply beautiful, emotionally telling moments, absolute gems hidden by the dross of everyday life and its demands.

Went for a ride out to UBC earlier in the day as I'd not been that way for a bit. Had a great time revisiting my favourite routes past and around campus. Day was not as bitterly cold or as fiercely windy as on Wednesday, (I didn't venture out to ride, in part  because it was so unpleasant. Poor Coriandre walked, from VPL, downtown, to take Aquabus and she was "frozen" by the time she stumbled in the patio door!), so I quite enjoyed the scenery, (Still loads of building going on!), although campus was relatively quiet. I think I hit Main Mall while classes were still in session, as there were few people about. Stats for ride:

Had a doctor's appointment for a referral to my dematologist this morning so I rode, my Brodie, over Burrard. (Don't like to take my Trek when I have to leave it on the street.) Office is just opposite St Paul's. After that I headed back home, around Seawall and Science World. Had a bite to eat for lunch and then headed out again, this time on my carbon fibre steed! Hadn't been to your neck of the woods in some time so after crossing Lions Gate, I took Spirit Trail. Waved at you and Gianna as I passed your place, approximately. All the way to Fell adn then back to head into West Van. There I made my way along Bellevue as far as Travers and Marine.

Knew I'd have almost 50+ km on the clock once I left Stanley park so decided I'd head out to UBC. I wanted to do at least 80 km for the day but once I was at the top of the Foreshre Hill I figured I could, quite easily extend it to make 100+ km. Must say that when I left Granville Island I was bucking a pretty steady head wind so I really had to keep telling myself that this was what I wanted to do. In the end, I dipsy-doodled around Kits Point to give me the necessary distance. Although day was far warmer and certainly not as windy as Wednesday, my feet and fingers were blocks of ice when I walked in the door. Still tingling as I scribe! Stats for ride:

Coriandre and Chloë have gone to the Roundhouse Performance Centre to see Housing Matters Media Project:

    http://www.housingmattersmedia.com/screenings/

"a media installation created in response to the housing crisis faced by youth as they transition out of government care." This, of course, is an issue which Aunt Leah's is gravely concerned about. Corinne just returned and she said Chloë made some important contacts with some of the filmakers and the organizer, Patti Fraser.  There were six short videos and from the Program:

The 19th Birthday Party invites the viewer to join the table and reflect on the meanings of turning 19 years of age and becoming one of the seven hundred youth who will age out of government care this year in British Columbia.

Quite proud of Chloë and the work that she is doing. Next week we will see The Foster Boy, a Swiss film. Quite looking forward to it:
Hi there Facebook friends, so curious to know what you are all doing next Wednesday?? Why not come see the film mentioned below and support youth in care? Since when does seeing a movie act like donating money to a cause??!! Since now!!!! looking forward to seeing all my friends there!!!
Reel Causes is showing "The Foster Boy". A portion of proceeds will go to support Aunt Leah's.

Lazy day tomorrow and then my Book Club on Sunday evening, Lawrence Hill's Blood: The Stuff of Life, 2013 CBC Massey Lectures. So called Family Day on Monday so a long weekend. I didn't realize it was a long weekend and Chloë said, "Dad, every weekend is a long weekend for you!" Grateful children indeed!

Well, must away as Coramandel would like to watch a recorded movie, Killing Them Softly, a mobster flic with Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, (one of his last films, I suspect.) and Ray Liotta. Great start to my "regular" long-weekend! Fondestos from Cora Lee. Cheers, Patrizzio!

    Dear Corinne & Patrick

Sorry I did not get back to you right away and thank you for the lovely visit. It was great seeing you both and thank you for putting up with our two hounds. Benson & Tess I could tell enjoyed themselves immensely.

When we took Tess & Benson up island to Courtney to The Tree of Life for assessment to see Dr. Raines. For acupuncture and new herbs we were confident that Tess would be on the road to recovery. A few weeks ago for the first time in four months Tess did not have a seizure on the Full Moon We both started to relax. I took Dr Raines advice and started planning to put both dogs on a Raw Food Diet. Which is a another huge learning curve but necessary. Dr. Raines advised me that Tess MUST NOT play on days that she has a seizure

On Sat. morning the 18th Tess had a seizure that was totally off schedule. I think it was attributed to the raw bone we gave her the night before. Raw bones can cause seizures. It lasted less than a minute but still we became cautious. That afternoon we took Tess & Benson to the beach and Tess had a strenuous play with Chica. A Rhodisian Ridgeback who is a good 95 lbs. Tess always goes into a frenzy and exhausts herself with excitement It is the pure joy of playing with Chica. We noticed when we came home that her ears were red and burning hot and she was hot all over. Apparently her body heats up and this is what is contributing to her seizures. I fed her and gave her Seizure remedy her meds.

I had forgot that she had a seizure that morning and she is not allowed to play on that day. So what began was bizarre it was the beginning of a Focal Seizure or a Complex Partial Seizure. She started to run hysterically through the house and outside. She started hiding downstairs, trembling and then running frantically. She began salivating although she was conscious and aware of her surroundings. She ran hysterically and in complete fear for three hours of complete disorientation. We did not know what to do. We turned off all the lights in the house. And tried to calm her as she went in and out of this bizarre behavior.

She did not go into a grand mal seizure. She remained conscious. As she started to come out of this Complex Partial Seizure. She began to show facial twitching as her head sporadically bobbed up and down. Her lip periodically curled up with the head movement and the facial tick. I thought she was having a stroke or maybe she was.

As I have observed on the daily calendar of events I noticed that after exhausting plays with any dog she would have a seizure the next day. Plus I can now see how hyper Tess is and frenetic she is in her games of play. I am trying to calm her down. Over exercising can cause seizures. Anxiety can cause seizures.

Last Sat. I decided that she would just walk on lead. Or run with Benson. But no hard games of play. I am doing this for a two week period to see if indeed the hard games are contributing to causing her seizures. So this is what I am going to work on. To develop a calmness

During January she had eight seizures. I feel all attributed to over exercising. However, after only doing long walks last weekend with her
she slept till well past 6 a.m. on both sat. & sun. A first in four months. And no seizures. (Normally she gets me up at 2 & 4a.m. for the last four months) Over exertion places her in a constant state of hunger so I am always feeding her. Sometimes up to seven meals a day.

I already have noticed calmness. This is what I need to achieve in her. I honestly feel that she can grow out of these seizures. For the last four months the seizures were only on the Full Moon and Half Moon. This has stopped. In Jan. they were happening just after a hard game of play or after having a bone. Constant knawing can cause seizures. Anyways no hard games just calmness. Plus I can now see how hyper Tess is and frenetic she is in her games of play. I am trying to calm her down. I will keep you informed as to her progress.

We are heading up island again next week to Courtney. To visit The Tree of Life for assessment and acupuncture. We are staying for a few days as we are going to look at some beach waterfront homes. With the possibility of moving there once John retires. I honestly don’t know if I could ever give up our home. But time will tell.

I know you are both busy with so many wonderful activities. Do enjoy all those wonderful moments with family and friends. Much love, Jean, John, Benson & Tess.
