St Patrick's Compton Columbia Kristin Blues: Monday, March 17th

Time changes all things: there is no reason why language should escape this universal law. -Ferdinand de Saussure, linguist (1857-1913)

You've got to do your own growing, no matter how tall your grandfather was. -Irish Proverb

Lads, fine for me to host here. Sounds great. G

p, nice to hear you had a quiet weekend. I will fill you in on mine when next we ride. My constraints this morning may conflict with yours. I have to pick up Tia from soccer camp at UBC at noon and drive her to the East side - Main & 49th. So unless we can ride about 9:30 this morning or after your 3PM meeting we will have ride our separate ways. Let me know, W

Hi Soccer Dad!

Meeting up around 9:30 am is just fine with me, (In fact, poifect, relative to timing of my meeting), if you don't mind weathering the possible showers forecast for 10:00ish. Let me know where you'd like to head, swathed in rain gear and countless fenders, and we'll plan accordingly.

I'll let Mick know about playing at your place. Should be fun to hear about his month in Palm Springs. Cheers, Low Profile Weekend Patrizzio!

Hi Mick et al! We will be congregating, for one table of bridge, and countless tumblers of expensive malt, at Whirlygig's place, Il Mansione Maddisone, at 7:01 pm this Wednesday, March 19th. Formal wear de riguer. Give me a shout just to confirm you are still on. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Hi I'm in. George can you please remind me of your address. Thanks Mick

Mike, just in case you need the address G          I will be there. Thanks Ed

Hi Principessa!

Trust you and David are well. Must apologize for not being in touch sooner. No excuses but plenty of reasons! At any rate, just wanted to reiterate that we'd love you to pop by any time you happen to be in the neighbourhood. Just give me a bit of advance notice to ensure that we will be around. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Hi Paolo!

Thanks again, to both you and Joan, for the wonderful evening. Added bonus with viewing of Decasia so thanks very much for the private screening as well!

I booked four tickets for both Nymphomaniac I & II. Cora Lee will be at church praying for our black souls and I assume Jane may well be working. In any event, I'll contact Kjell and let him know what I've done and if Jane wishes to see films I'm sure they can obtain tickets.

Not sure how you plan to get to theatre but if you plan to drive you could come here, park your car in one of our spots and we'll have Coriandre drop us off at VIFF. If you are up for it, after screenings, weather allowing, it is not a bad walk back over Granville Bridge to our place. Might even be able to persuade Branson to collect us if she has stopped speaking in tongues by then! We can cross that bridge, so to speak, later. Will probably have dinner around 7:00ish so Jane might be able to join us for meal even if she can't make cinema. Anyway, I have the tickets so let me know what you think about travel arrangements and we'll plan accordingly. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Good to see you both Patrick - we enjpoyed it. Thanks for lining up the tickets. We'll bus down and would welcome the walk to your place after - we'll probably need to clear our heads anyway.

If you and Kjell (assuming he can make it) are inspired by the film we should consider a von Trier fest over a couple of weekends at our place and watch his ouvre in total. We'll leave Antichrist to the end as it will no doubt freak everyone out. Talk soon...Paul

Hi again, Paolo! Just had a message from Kjell. He called, as well, but I was out riding and Cora Lee chatted with him. They are still in Campbell River until tomorrow. He will join us on Sunday, for films as well as dinner. Since Jane is working until 5:15 pm she will come over afterwards for the meal.

I assume you intend to take bus downtown so I'll meet you outside VanCity Theatre around 1:50 pm or so. Show starts at 2:10 pm. Is that enough time for you to find seats? If not, let me know and I can be there earlier.

I'd certainly enjoy a Trier fest whenever you think of holding it so put me down on the Whitney Dunbar Film Festival list! See you on Sunday if we don't chat beforehand. Cheers, Patrizzio!                   Happy St Patrick's Day Kjell!

Trust you had an enjoyable "Island" weekend.

For our part, Saturday evening had a lovely dinner with the Whitneys. Joan and Paul are interested, as well, in Lars von Trier's latest so I booked four tickets for both Nymphomaniac I & II. Cora Lee will be at church praying for our black souls so she won't be going. If you are on, that is fine. I assume, perhaps incorrectly, that Jane may well be working. I'm sure you can still obtain tickets if she is keen to go as well. In any event, let him me know if you and/or Jane are interested/available.

Furthermore, we have invited the Whitneys back to our place after screenings for dinner so you are most welcome as well. Will probably have dinner around 7:00ish so Jane might be able to join us for meal even if she can't make cinema. Anyway, I have the tickets so let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly. Talk soon. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Happy St Patrick's Day, St Patrick! We are still in Campbell River (until tomorrow). I just talked to Corinne. Assume I'm one of the tickets for Sunday? Would love to compare our impressions afterwards, and assume Jane (out at the moment) would be thrilled to listen in. She will be working until 5.15, and I think she would not have had the nerve to watch the movie anyway. But first of all, looking forward to seeing you on Friday! Cheers, bestestos, and fondestos, Kjell

Hi again, Kjell!

Yes, one of the tickets is for you. I assume you intend to take bus downtown so I'll meet you outside VanCity Theatre around 1:50 pm or so. Show starts at 2:10 pm. Is that enough time for you to find a seat? Have mentioned same to Whitneys. If not, let me know and I can be there earlier. Glad Jane can join us for dinner later.

Just got back from an outing with Whirlygig, an hour or so ago. He had a time constraint and so we left Heartbreak Terrace at 9:30 pm and made for Stanley Park. Did a quick Lions Gate up-and-over and back again and it was just gorgeous by the time we were heading for home. Left Giorgio near the Aquatic Centre as he needed to return via Burrard Bridge to be home in time.

I continued on the Seawall and made my way around Science World. Once back home I detoured into GI as I wanted to make for Kits Point in order to bring up my distance. Wind was blowing fiercely and English Bay had whitecaps. I almost expected to see some sailboats beached along Kits Beach as the wind was howling. Fortunately, none had suffered such a fate, at least when I rode past.

At one point, I had considered continuing on to UBC as I had enough time to accomplish the ride. However, I must admit I literally didn't have the will to battle such a ferocious head wind all the way along Spanish Banks! Must say that I didn't complain as I virtually hurtled back home, however! Once again, I took my Brodie as I thought we might get caught in some showers that were forecast, at one point. Hence, I don't have GPS evidence. Nevertheless, stats for ride: 51.32 km over 2:42'50, AVG 18.9 km/hr. I blame the wind on the pathetic average, the elements rather than the rider, of course, Dear Reader!!! See you Friday. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Famous Blue Bike Flaky Friend!

Sorry that it has taken me a bit to reply to your last message. Unfortunately, I'm the bearer of bad news, inasmuch, as my bike expert couldn't come up with an exact valuation but he suspects brand is/was sold through Canada Tire or Costco. This being the case, and also viewing
"the beautiful blue bike", as you so lovingly charactrize it, I would hazard that you only paid between $150-$300 for a bicycle you obviously only rode to church on Sunday! Inflate the tires, when you unpack the pump, lsit it for $100 and be more than happy to get $20.

Might even be better to give it to a local charity or else to someone who actually wants to ride a bike regularly! My first bike was in a similar price range and I rode it for many years, (as did countless Swiss boarders), until I upgraded. Anyway, time to let go of your Depression mentality, Hoarder Woman!

With respect to my biking, (It's not just about YOU, Donna Maria!), have had some pretty good rides of late.
Fondestos to you both, dear Flakoid and Heraldo, from Coriandre. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Patrick,

After all that abuse how can I thank you for asking your friend to give me an idea of what the bike is worth.  Is your friend young as we didn't buy the bike from Costco or Canadian Tire as they were 't even around when we got the bike - or at least certainly not in the northern part of BC (that is anywhere beyond Kamloops).  I am sure I paid a LOT of money for it!!!

Actually we took it down to the bike shop today and he is going to put new tubes in the tires.  I probably will ask the amount you suggested and then will sell it to anyone that makes a bid.  We have a lot of things and the biggest thing is to not have them at the end of the day.    And, just so you don't think I am toooooo selfish I have taken a number of things including beds etc. to the women's shelter, boxes and boxes of things to the Hospital Thrift Store and Gerry's hats, shoes and clothes to the Men's shelter.  I would hate to have you think I was not thinking of others.

It is amazing how many things our friends are buying - everyone wants a bargain.  We had 2 large cork bulletin boards filled with pins we had gathered over the years and the fellow from the moving company was vibrating he was so excited when we said we would be happy to give them to him.  He collects pins and has over 6000 of them mounted in his house.  Darn I gave the magnets we had on our fridge in the garage to the Thrift Store - I should have brought them to you but then I don't think there is any room on your fridge for more magnets.

Anyway thank you for your help - much appreciated.  Gerry and I enjoyed your description of your days.  That was very interesting about your night in jail - with all your adventures it sounds like you were there for a week at least.  There is a certain fascination about jails and the inmates.   I will tell you my jail story when we next meet - no I did not spend a night there but........Dawn

actually it was a phone call out of the blue.they are just back from south africa near his alma mater;matt

Good luck! I'll await your report. Cheers.

Hi Big Al!

Thanks for the Buona Fortuna as it held me in very good stead. Just got back from an outing with Whirlygig, an hour or so ago. He had a time constraint and so we left Heartbreak Terrace at 9:30 pm and made for Stanley park. Did a quick Lions Gate up-and-over and back again and it was just gorgeous by the time we were headind for home. Men are Just Happier because They are Surrounded by Babes like You!
Hi JT/Flamin'! We are going to see The Great Beauty, best foreign language film this year at Oscars, (with English subtitles), at Fifth Avenue at 6:50 pm so please join us if interested. I guess Sarge will not be coming! Cheers, Patrizzio!

It's got to be better than the last movie Joanne !!  Sounds good

Dear Nicotine Fiend, et al!

Since next NRBC gathering is at The Isaly Inn, I certainly hope I will be attending. More than attending, I'm intending to teach you yet more lessons in both bridge and humility, homework for which you would do well to swot up, given your particular lack of bidding skills and ingrained, general tendency towards hubris! Will roll out the red carpet for you, Agamemnon, me lad! Cheers, Patrizzio on behalf of Clytemnestra and The Sisterhood!
              Hi Jo-Anne!

Sorry that it has taken me a bit to reply to your last missive. What wonderful news about Marilyn's bequest! Of course I remember her. How could one forget her? The quintessential negative stereotype of a librarian indeed! However, once you got past her rather intimidating exterior you certainly discovered the depth and breadth of her knowledge. Happy to say, I always got along with her and enjoyed chatting whenever the occasion allowed. Will be most curious to hear about and see new space once finished.
Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Patrick, dear family Thank you for the interesting news. With you is something going on.... and we are of course happy to meet you at the wedding in Mexico. There we will hopefully have enough time to chat!! We're doing very well and so our daughters. o.k. my friend......see you soon! Anna Maria Tremonte and Rudi Rudenheimer

Hi Anna Maria Tremonte and Rudi Ruddenheimer!

How lovely to hear from you and know that all goes well with you both as well as your wonderful daughters! Delighted, of course, that we will have a chance to visit in Mexico. Will you be travelling elsewhere in North America? You are always welcome in Vancouver, at our place, when next you visit.

Spring seems to be working its way into this month and with the improving weather I have had a number of pretty good rides of late.
Off to see The Great Beauty, (La Grande Bellazza),
best foreign language film this year at Oscars, at Fifth Avenue, with Flamin' shortly. Absolutely gorgeous day today, although the west wind was quite ferocious at times and rather cool. Towards the end of my ride, near Kits Beach, where the girls used to play beach volleyball, the wind was blowing so fiercely that English Bay was covered in angry whitecaps. I almost expected to see some sailboats beached along the beach there as the wind was literally howling. Fortunately, none had suffered such a fate, at least when I rode past.

Fondestos to you both, Anna Maria and Rudenheimer, from Coriandre. Cheers from a Former Jail-Bird, now Pannekoeken Patrizzio!

Xin chao to all We are currently in Saigon enjoying our breakfast when we received the great news that Will got the job at UBC. We are so relieved that they will be staying in Van for at least 7 years. Only 2 more days in Vietnam before we start our long trek home. It's been a great vacation, even better sharing it with Liz & Doug. Every day has been packed with exciting adventures and more history than I can store in my little brain.

We've gone from 7 degree weather in Beijing to 37 degrees in Saigon. Off to Cu Chi tunnels in a few minutes and then to the Mekong Delta tomorrow before heading home Thursday. No time to fill in more details but we're loving it all. Hope all is well with everyone. Cheers Elaine

Hi, thanks for thinking of me, I hope you enjoyed the movie. Good night, Joanne

P,  thanks for the ride today. Made it home in just enough time to shower and get in the car and got in four different traffic snarls bewteen UBC and 49th & Main. If the weather holds tomorrow morning I would ride the same again and let someone else spare for me at 12:30. I better pass on the movie tonight in deference to my spouse of Irish heritage -- and suffer some substandard whisky washed down with Irish nachos. W.

Hi Whirlmeister!

Thank you for the early ride. Fit in poifectly with my day but sorry to hear about your nasty snarls. I keep forgetting all about such things when not driving much.

Absolutely gorgeous day today, although the west wind was quite ferocious at times and rather cool, especially towards the end of my ride, near Kits Beach as you probably noticed.
The wind was blowing so fiercely that English Bay was covered in angry whitecaps. I almost expected to see some sailboats beached along the beach there as the wind was literally howling. Fortunately, none had suffered such a fate, at least when I rode past.

As I mentioned, saw The Great Beauty, (La Grande Bellazza), at Fifth Avenue, with Flamin'. Joanne was not able to join us. According to The Sisterhood: "Movie was weird. Michele and I were not big fans." For my part, I felt quite differently. To my mind there were numerous references/hommages to Fellini, (to the extent that I'm familiar with his work, particularly La Dolce Vita and Amarcord), which resonated quite forcefully with me. Furthermore, I was gripped by the central character's struggle with self-knowledge. The Wrathful One would have loved the fact that Jep was always smoking. Ironically, he made it look pretty cool and certainly appealing. Knowing that you know how I feel about this addiction I'm rather embarrassed to admit that I didn't find it at all offensive. It really was an integral part of the character's character. Never made me want to smoke but I didn't sit there and condemn him or the film, the way some dope did about Sigourney Weaver's character in Avatar.

Anyway, I'm up for another ride so I'll give you call around 8:00ish. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Lisa,I was wondering if you happened to see a long, black knit shawl lying about your place? I believe I may have lay it over your bannister when we arrived in the rain last week, but it may have been moved as more people were arriving. No worries, but if you see it, Patrick would pick it up sometime J Hope you’re well J Ayn

Ayn, I haven’t seen it but I’ll look tonight. When you left you thought you had left it at the flower store….I hope we have it. Lisa

LOL! I did think I had let it at the shop but Chloe thinks I had it in my arms with the flowers at your place…I was too busy dodging raindrops to notice when I lost track to be honest!     We found it! Let me know when Patrick would like to come by and pick it up….You’ll need it before this summer at Tofino! Lisa
