- Patrick James Dunn This is my Tour de France! That left me a bit sad but she'll bounce back !!
Hi Tinsel Town! Are you having or attending an Oscar party? All here, except Picasso Dirston, are going over to Chloë's. Should be fun. Rosita is making her fab baked bean dish! Coriandre is doing bacon wrapped dates, stuffed with Parmesano and an artichoke dish scrumptuoso!
I had a grand ride yesterday with Sara McGillivray, a lovely young woman, (She is now 52 and has a 16 year old son!), I worked with at UBC. At any rate, we reconnected through LinkedIn while I was in France and funnily enough, she and her husband, Dermot and son, Jake, spent about a week in Pézenas, the wonderful market town near Neffiès, where my rental house was located. Anyway, we finally managed to get together, (Last Saturday there was too much snow so we had to cancel! Snowing now and it was -50º in Winnipeg a night or two ago!), yesterday and I really enjoyed riding with her for many reasons, not the least of which was the story you will discover if you follow this link. On Friday, I had ridden around the roundabout in question! This from Sara:
Hi Pat, Here is the story about the apples.
http://www.publicaffairs.ubc.ca/ubcreports/2007/07jun07/trees.html
Thought you would enjoy hearing this about Uncle Erich!
Chloë stayed to have a drink and a chat after work at GIB and she was still here when guests arrived. Since Dermot had worked in the food and beverage industry he and Chloë knew quite a few people in common. She left to go home to start getting ready for today just before we served fried haloumi, with sliced tomatoes and lemon wedges. Sara and Dermot had not had this dish before and really loved it. Must say, it was good.
Nana had done a more than superb job of baked salmon steaks, lemon potatoes and Parmesano encrusted zucchini strips. For dessert, Sara contributed a gluten-free orange/almond cake which was absolutely divine. Of course, plenty of vino along the way and then, because we needed it, malt, Irish Whiskey and schnapps to close out evening. Last of the bottle of schnapps that Nadienka had brought for me in 2010, made by her grandfather. Dermot was very impressed as it really is a fantastic drop.
Anyway, Nana was feeling pretty good by this time so she poured remainder of bottle into her glass, about a third of a large tumbler! (Chugalug Chloë, when we were in Oak Harbour for Pierre's birthday cake green hair!) I quickly snatched glass away from her and redistributed it. She doesn't even like such spirits and furthermore was going to dilute it with as much water! Sacrilege. Dermot's eyes just about popped out of his head when he saw what she had done! Knock it back, Nana!!!! Set 'em up boys!!!
Anyway, it was a very, very pleasant evening. Sara and Dermot are both extremely interesting individuals and we talked non-stop all night. Dermot is probably going to join our book club as he is a keen reader. Know he'll make a wonderful addition to group. Looking forward to your coming visit. Much love to you, Ayn, and Los Horridos, Dad/Poppa! Pics: last night and this morning!
Hi Kids!
Trust you made it home without mishap! Thank you both for wonderful evening. Quite a blast. Forgot to give you your cake ring. (As well, don't think I gave you a cup of java, Sara, even though I brewed a jug! Sorry for that.) Dessert was more than superb so thanks again for delicious offering, Sara. Not sure if you've been back to collect your car or have done so already. In any event, we can arrange transfer at some point. We will proably be leaving to go to Chloë's Oscar bash around 4:00 pm so could leave ring on patio if we are out when you are by. Just let me know what you'd like to do.
Thanks as well for link to apple trees. I sent it to Ayn as I knew she would enjoy hearing this about her Uncle Erich!
Okay, will be in touch regarding Book Club, Dermot, and more "training" rides, Sara Jane! Cora Lee and Rosie-the-Riveter are at Canadian Memorial, (praying for my black soul), as with Oscar party Coriandre can't make 4:00 pm service at Heartwood. Take care of each other. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi David! Sorry that it has taken me a bit to respond but I finally made contact with another friend, David Lanceleot, at Marquis, (http://www.marquis-wines.com), as John Clerides, the owner, is out of town, presumably on a buying trip. David suggested you contact his boss directly at: john@marquis-wines.com
saying that I told you about store, (So that it is not just a cold call!), outlining when you will be in Vancouver and that you would be interested in having a tasting. (David also opined that another possibility is to invite John to the bbq we plan to host, which would be more than fine.) David mentioned that Marquis would likely be more interested if you don't already have another agent for BC or elsewhere in Canada. I said I didn't think that you had such a person/agency but perhaps I'm wrong, knowing what you said about Banff.
Bad news is that business, or otherwise, technically you are still only allowed two bottles Duty Free, per person. My own experience is that three usually doesn't cause a fuss. David even said the same. Since duty is calculated on cost per bottle you might be able to "fiddle" price. Bring in most expensive wine under Duty Free umbrella and bite taxes on rest. Bring along an order sheet with highly reduced clearance prices, per esempio! You can see how my own mind works in trying to out-manoeuvre our government and its stranglehold on liquor. Give me Europe and the free flow there!
At any rate, I'll leave it with you. I'm quite happy to act as a go-between but I think it's probably better for you to deal directly with Marquis as you will know what questions to ask, etc. Hope this makes sense.
More snow today so am very pleased that I went for a grand ride yesterday. Fond regards to Pat. Let me know about trip dates as soon as you have them so we can plan accordingly Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Blossom peaking through snow dusting this morning! Was -50ºC in Winnipeg, where we are from, a few days ago!
I was just planning my trip into Vancouver and of course planning to make sure I have enough charge for my Tesla. It looks like I should be fine as long as I don't drive around too much. What is your address so I can see how far it is from the hotel and then how far it is to the charge place in Washington on the way back. I hope to be at your place the night before I leave........I think you said I could stay there. Thanks...........Dave
OK I have tentative dates. I am a big tennis fan so I have to plan my trip around the French Open which ends on Sunday June 8 AND Wimbledon which begins on June 23. We will leave on June 11 and be in your area on June 16. We will go to two or three restaurants: Blue Water Cafe, Cioppino’s Mediterranean Grill and Le Crocodile. We will leave from your place on the the morning of June 19 or 20 depending on your BBQ. How does that sound for you?..............Dave
Hi Dave!
Just back from Chloë's Oscar party. Sarge won the prize, ($50), for most correct winners. He has now been banned, again, for a year, as he has won pool twice beforehand, never having seen any of the movies nomianted!
Dates sound just fine. We live on Lamey's Mill Road so you should be able to plug that into Google Maps, or other, and plot distances. The nights of either June 18th or 19th, or both, are fine as far as staying with us as well as having the bbq. We will arrange for gathering on the evening that would work best once you determine whether you are going to be having a tasting at Marquis or not.
I presume you plan to stay at a hotel when you first arrive and further that you can charge your vehicle while there. If all you require is an electric outlet, that is certainly possible at our place.
Just a word about Blue Water Cafe. We have not been there for ages and I was not overly impressed, as I recall. Friend who is currently working as a sou chef in Oslo worked at BWC for a year or more shortly after he graduated from the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, coincidentally, about two blocks from us. According to Patrick, the restaurant is not worth it, more hype than anything else. I just pass this along. I trust his judgement but I a have no idea if place is different now.
Let me know as soon as you have ironed out things with Marquis, one way or another, and we'll settle more dates, bbq, stay with us, etc. For now, at least we know when you plan to arrive and leave. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hello to our Favourite Naramatians, Lurkin' and Acedia-Prone Man!
Coriandre just booked us into Naramata Suite Dreams. We were too late to obtain accommodation at the Heritage Inn but former looks fine so we are pleased. Now all we need to do is worry about how many wineries we can visit!!!
Have taken a look at link you kindly passed along, Lynne. Seems to cover most/much of what we'd like to see. However, both of us are not particularly enamoured of bus tours, even with a fairly small group. Also, Cora Lee thinks hotels looked like they were Western-based. Not to say we want to live in a ditch with Slum Dog Millionaires but a few notches up from Best Marigold Hotel, at least, from time to time, might be fun. Anyway, will continue with research. Let us know your feelings. Looking forward to your upcoming birthday! Keep Coramandel away from high test spirits, Jugos. Fondestos from Cora Lee to you both. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hola Patricio--Great pics of the snow. It's nice to see the "Coasters" dealing with the white stuff once in awhile just like we Naramatians. Fortunately for me, Petey has an early dentist appointment tomorrow a.m. so that my ascent of the driveway to go to my morning fitness class will not be the ONLY reason that he has to roll out the tractor!
Re the India website. I only sent it as an example of some places we might think of visiting and to see some few pics of same. I was not (even remotely) suggesting that we pursue such a tour. Yech!!
Enjoy your Oscars party. It sounds yummy. We are going it alone in our cozy little den and will nosh on Petey's famous pork chop casserole for din-dins maybe on the TV tables. Cheers, "LL"
Hi Lurkin'!
Just back from Chloë's Oscar party. Sarge won the prize, ($50), for most correct winners. He has now been banned, again, for a year, as he has won pool twice beforehand, never having seen any of the movies nominated! Had loads of fun in spite of Sarge's maddening ability to predict correctly. How did your TV tables and fare turn out? Hard to believe that our family used to eat off same in the late '50's and '60's. When Cora Lee and I first started dating we'd often got to her parent's place for Sunday dinner, eating in the rec room, watching The Wonderful World of Disney!
In fact, I did enjoy seeing pictures of some of the sites covered by link so that was quite interesting. From what we had discussed earlier, I didn't think that such a tour was a possibility but just wanted to make sure everyone understood what people had in mind.
Buona Fortuna with snow and ice tomorrow morning! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!
PS: Flamin' was in Ft St John this weekend, officiating for Skate Canada. She was supposed to be back in Vancouver by 4:30 pm but plane couldn't get out. In the end she didn't land until close to 10:00 pm so she had to take Sky Train home as Sarge was at Oscar Party! Pics: Oscars at Chloë's
Inviting both to your BBQ would be great, of course it is up to you. I will check about bringing in more wine and paying for the duty, but I will let John know it would be better for him to stop by my winery if he is interested in buying some of my wine.
I only sold the 1996 vintage to Canada and actually we have not been selling to any distributors or retailers in the United States or Canada for years. I have more vines that will be producing in the next few years so we will either sell grapes or if we have distributors we could make more wine. Right now we sell about 5,000 cases by word of mouth and thus do not do any marketing. I love making wine so I would rather make more. I should know dates for our trip in the next week or so. Right now we have our biggest event this weekend and next............Dave
Hi again, David!
Sounds great. If John and David are available for bbq that would be terrific. Good idea about having John visit. Know you are busy so no rush on dates. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Dear Doubting Facebook Free Burnaboid!
While I admire and applaud your close scrutiny of my ride with WWW, your obvious lack of technological expertise has led to your befuddlement. The 2 seconds you fuss about can be accounted for at the very end of the ride when I stopped in front of the parkade gate, finally touch the Searing, Burning Ground and then clicked a button to turn off odometre. In future, I shall click button before coming to a standstill, Dear Nitpicker!
With
respect to elevation gain/loss if you take the time to follow the
route, (Click on green balloon to invoke ride, you doltish Luddite!),
you will see that at around 33 km, on East Kent, between Victoria and
Elliot, one dips below sea level. At this, and other negative elevation
points, I didn't need my trusty Snorkelfluggenheimapparat as with my
increased, usually solo riding, (I'm sad to say!), my lung capacity now
allows me to hold my breath for 1.33 km, thus riding underwater poses
little if any problem. While I detect the whining sub-text of you
wanting to deep-six me, I fear you will need more than such petty, ill
founded denigrations/slurs to derail the Islay Inn Loco Canondale
Express and its Il Conduttore! The train is now
leeaaaaaaavvvvviiiinnnngggg on track # 5. All aboard!!!! Cheers, from an

Furiously to keep up with WWW! LOL!

Hi, Nadine Thanks for doing this again. Unfortunately, I will be in New York that day and unable to attend. I know it will be a success! Hope you are well. Cheers, Matt
Hi Matt! Nice life you have, bopping between the Sunshine Coast and The Big Apple. Stay in Vancouver sometime and see your former colleagues! Have a grand time! Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Diana! Welcome to Soda Rock! From an earlier update, I gather you have recently started this job. Nice work if you can get it! Anyway, my Visa card was cancelled while on my last trip to California and I was actually at Soda Rock when I discovered this. I had hoped to pop by on return leg of my journey home, to update my file, but was unable to do so. As well, we usually collect our shipment later in summer so need to know if this is still possible. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Patrick, Thank you for the update! I’ve processed your March shipment and will hold it until you visit this summer. Do you have any idea when you’ll visit us? Cheers, Diana
Hi again, Diana! Working on Sunday! Aren't you supposed to be at an Oscar Party?
Not quite sure yet, of our travel dates, but I'm hoping sometime in late May, early June. Look forward to meeting you whenever we drive down. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio! Barrel Tasting weekend! Cheers, Diana
Hi Giorgio!
How fared your match? With respect to the infamous NRBC, Dermot is interested in joining the book club, in spite of many of its acedia prone members! Might be too soon for Green Lettuce but you could let him know. Looking forward to coming food fight! Think I'll wear my riding helmet, kevlar vest, chain mail gloves and my Snorkelfluggenheimapparat, just in case someone starts flailing sharpened chopsticks! Cheers, Il Conduttore Estremamente Cauti!
P, I am chortling about the food fight reference, a welcome new dimension to the NRBC ...
BC Doubles was small draw but we had fun nonetheless. In our Div 1 -- 3/4 win we took home a 1777 bottle of Chateau Pope de Neuf -- that I think we should try at our next enclave. The Men' s Open was spectacular (Todd and Cruikshank vs Berg & Delvacarrio) but foreshortened by an injury to Victor Berg of all people -- after T & C had them down 2 - 0). Chasy & I watched the Women's final with Cathy C and Tessa B winning 3 -0 over Doucas and Delgado .
Personally, I would welcome Dermot to the book club although it well offend the constitution to include another actual reader. May require another unilateral and unanimous (I am) amendment.
Enjoy the Oscars the Grouch evening with the sisterhood. Does that event have anything to do with waste management? W
Hi 1777 Pope-in-the-Pizza Contest!
Just back from Chloë's Oscar party. Waist management indeed! I'll need to ride 200 km tomorrow, so wonderful was spread!
Glad to hear that you are amenable,as ever, to bending constitution to our wills. The end always justifies the means! You will be happy, I'm sure, to know that we are now in possession of a fine piggy bank, just waiting to be feed on mouth-watering fines!
On a sadder note, I had a message, from Ray, when I got back, that Arthur Chapman died last night.
I'm hoping/planning to go riding around 9:00 am as it looks like it might be dry for a couple of hours. Any interest? Let me know. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Pat, Arthur died last night. He was in a hospice in Ladner near where his daughter resides. It as a peaceful ending and the family are relieved but very sad. Ray
Hi Raymond:
Deepest sympathy to you. I know you and Arthur were close friends and that the very manner of his death has been most difficult. From what you have said, I suppose it came almost as quickly as he could have wished. Please pass along my heartfelt sympathy to Stella when next you are in contact. I will drop off a card at her shop this coming week. Again, sincere condolences, Patrick.
Thanks, Pat. It could have dragged out a lot longer according to the medical people, so it's a relief in a way but still a shock. Ray

When you guys gonna come out and visit Gary and me? You can ride your bike when weather gets better! Weren't you just in Italy or somewhere? Matt
