I’d like to accept the offer of full board at the Inn, please. It will be great to see you. I always like to be there for the end of the bridge game when Patrick begins his suicide bidding. See you in the afternoon. Peter
Dear Not Backward About Coming Forward, Pushy to the nth Degree, Slanderous Naramatian!
Whew, I'm out of breath after having to write the extended truth! Need a couple of shots of Panama Red to get back to normal and bring down my hammering pulse.
Will be grand to have another Freeloader at the Islay Inn, although we are much disappointed that Lurkin' will not be along to ameliorate your presence, Dom Jugos! In any event, you mistake me for Admiral Barnacle for he be the one what bids suicidally at even's end, his erratic behaviour usually spurred on by his frustration over his poor cards, or perception of same. For my part, my bidding is, and has always been, precise, focused, supported, every time, by my point count. Furthermore, I certainly know when to stop, thank you very much! We shall see what we shall hear tonight. Of late, during this current round of weekly games I have often opened, without even looking at my hand, mind, no lower than 4 No Trump, per esempio. Call that suicidal? Not on your life, matey!
Your tarp on the deck awaits, Juggernaut Jugos, and a two-by-four pillow! Fondestos to my Favourite Naramatian, Lurkin', and grudging salutations to her more than difficult spouse. Cheers, Patio Proprietor Patrizzio!
How about a bulk order for these Craigslist stress relievers:

Hi Big Al!
Great idea BUT far too late to do any good. Would have been wonderful to have an ostrich pillow for all of the interminable meetings at the Library! Would have sent a clear message as well! Cheers, "Head in the Sand" Patrizzio!

Well done, Chloë! Cheers!!!
Sorry to hear that you are still laid up. Is it the cold/flu you mentioned? Must say, my cough took quite some time to loosen up in my chest. Still have the odd few coughs but nothing like the maddeningly persistent one it was for at least two weeks.

Must away now as I've orders to carry out, vacuuming, tidying up, etc. Mme. Coriandre is having a luncheon here, at 1:00 pm, for the senior staff at Heartwood, along with minister, as she is taking over from latter as church member responsible for restaurant itself, overall budget, employee HR, and the like. I'm to go for a ride or else am to banish myself to bedroom, to huddle in a corner somewhere, out of sight, out of mind!
Will turn the tables on her this evening when The Brotherhood will be playing bridge here. Good friend, Peter, from Narmata, just happens to be in town, (He flew down this morning to put paper work in motion for a visa to China. He requires one for his next business trip there. Although technically retired he still does a fair bit of consulting for the mining industry.) He will come for dinner and stay overnight. We will be seeing the Lighthalls at the end of this month to celebrate his wife's birthday. Lynne was a classmate of ours at Library School. We'll drive up, with Flamin' and Sarge, and do some wine tasting over the last weekend in March. Should be fun.
Take care of yourself, Kjell, or at least have Jane take care of you! Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Kjell: Just wondering if you actually initiated request to connect on LinkedIn or if such messages are generated routinely, at some point, by the system itself. No big deal but I find some of the updates a bit "pushy"! Hope you are feeling better. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Of course I did not think I was initiating a request that obviously reached hundreds of people, but apparently I did. (I have hardly any use for LinkedIn any more.) And yes, I am feeling better and should be more or less fit for fight tomorrow. Any movie plans?/Cheers, Kjell
Hi Kjell, Initiator of Spurious Requests! to Millions!
Feel the same way you do about LinkedIn! Glad to hear your are well on road to full recovery. I'd love to see some films but I will probably have to wait until after the weekend. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Patrick, the Most Active Pensioner alive. I hold you to it.
Aloha, Shalom, Hello......
I am here, and have had a crazt last year and a bit...mostly stressful aging parent issues and trying to be a good daughter from across the country.
So nice to hear from both of you.....and I look forward to reconnecting as I settle into a more manageable schedule and life in general. Hope all is well with all of you, L'Chaim, Legs
Hi Legs!
Fab to hear form long, lost you! I certainly understand about the difficulty of aging parent issues and cannot imagine how much more stressful it must be trying to cope/deal with same at such a considerable distance.
At any rate, we are very well. Coriandre might as well be back working with all her volunteers activities but at least she is helping to save the world while I simply indulge/enjoy myself!
Anyway, if you are free/interested you are more than welcome to join us tonight. We start at 7:00 pm but if playing squash or doing something else earlier, just come by whenever you are finished. We can visit, rotate, dummy pours drinks. You know the routine. If not tonight, keep us posted. Where is the General? Fondestos and Cheers, Il Conduttore!
Pics: Bridge before Xmas!
Hi Lads! Just wondering how many of these I should order. I think they would be terrific way to cause collisions with stanchions and not have to explain away ogling! In spite of not wearing one, had quite a wonderful ride yesterday.
I'll place a bulk order for latest fashion in bike helmets as soon as I've heard back from those interested! Cheers, Il Conduttore!
Hi Peggster and Mr Fixit!
Fab to hear from you! Pleased you are recovering quickly from foot-in-the-mouth disease! Did you pour any malt into tea with Seniors? Glad your Mom is well. Will Mark be visiting The Cave? If so, we'll certainly say hello. All the best to you both. Buona Fortuna with bathroom. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Dave! Already having fun, especially at the thought of driving the Model S. Is it an earlier version of Ford's Model T? Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Kids!
More Duty Free hootch! Speaking of which, I just looked at the website for Duty Free Americas and their malt selection isn't very interesting. I suggest you pick up a bottle of Patron Anejo and then you will have some tequila while here. I would like some anyway. Fondestos, Love, and Cheers Dad/Poppa/Patrizzio!
Hi Matt! Would love to do just that. I ride to Horseshoe Bay reasonably regularly and have, on a number of occasions, from Departure Bay to Parksville when house sitting there. Never ridden in your neck of the woods. You and Gaz are on list for later in summer! Will miss you at luncheon. Cheers Patrizzio!
Tequila it is! Can hardly wait for the worm!
P, I will order two -- one for riding and one for squash. Maybe one I could use to protect me from the battering I get around the house.
Lest I forget to discuss this with you this evening: let me know if you are interested in bridge Sunday afternoon with the Smoker. Nicotino gets in around noon Sunday. I can host it here. W
Hi Giggster!
I'll order the Kevlar reinforced ones for you. This should help with the battering!
I'd love to play on Sunday afternoon but I will have to wait and see what The Sisterhood has planned. I think I mentioned that Ayn is flying up from Tinsel Town tomorrow. We are all attending Erich Vogt's memorial service on Saturday. The Green Lettuce Caper was arranged before Erich died so as it is I'll be missing a family dinner at our place on Sunday evening. If The Goils want to go shopping or to a movie I'll probably be Patrizzio Unchained. I suggest you try to cobble together a table and I'll join if I'm able. At any rate, we can chat a bit more about Sunday tonight.
Peter arrived about an hour ago and is now moaning about needing a snort so must away! Call when you are close and I'll come to let you into Heartbreak Parkade. Cheers, Head-in-the-Sandman Patrizzio!
Dear friends and supporters,
I wanted to take a moment to recognize how incredibly essential you are to everything that we do here at Aunt Leah’s Place.
It is your compassion that allows us to continue supporting youth and young moms as they create their life stories. It is your gift that helps them move forward with their education, with their job plans and with their hopes & dreams for the future.
As winter is turning quickly to spring and our programs expand and grow, it is important to take a moment and remember why we all do this. It is the young moms with no place to go and the vulnerable foster youth who are desperate for some guidance that push us to continue working hard every single day. The reason that these youth & moms will find homes and successful independence is because of you, our generous donors.
The services we provide at Aunt Leah’s Place are made possible because of your financial support. Once again I thank you for being part of the Aunt Leah’s Story. Without you it is not possible.
In the spirit of Leah, Gale Stewart Executive Director
Suzanne Cates Dodson (1933 – 2014)
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Suzanne Cates Dodson (1933 – 2014). Suzanne is remembered by members of the SLAIS community as an alumna, adjunct faculty member, benefactor, and staunch supporter of the school. Suzanne and her husband Earl (1928 – 2009) leave a lasting legacy at SLAIS and throughout UBC. The iSchool’s Dodson Visiting Professorship is funded by a donation from Suzanne and Earl Dodson and named in their honour.
Suzanne will also be remembered as a champion of the UBC Library. After graduating from SLAIS, Suzanne worked at the UBC Library for 36 years until her retirement in 1999. The Dodsons contributed funding to support numerous UBC Library initiatives. In 1996 they provided the funds to install an elevator in Koerner Library to better accommodate people with disabilities, as well as funds for lighting in the Atrium, and expansion of the rooftop patio. The Dodsons provided the funding necessary to initiate and complete a project that converted B.C. government sessional papers into microfilm, and to purchase an air conditioner to better preserve fragile and rare materials in the Rare Books and Special Collections vault. More recently, in 2007 they donated $20,000 to create the Suzanne Dodson Professional Development Award Endowment Fund to fund professional development opportunities for UBC Library employees. In recognition of their support to UBC Library, the Suzanne Cates Dodson and Earl D. Dodson Reading Room in the Chapman Learning Commons of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre was named in their honour.
The School wishes to extend condolences to the Dodson family. At Suzanne's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lion's Gate Hospital or the charity of your choice. For those wishing to share a memory of Suzanne, please go to www.hollyburnfunerals.com
A full obituary can be found here: DODSON, Suzanne Cates,February 3, 1933 - March 6, 2014.
Peacefully, at the Lions Gate hospital in North Vancouver on Thursday, March 6, 2014, Suzanne passed away. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Earl, in 2008. She was the eldest daughter of Capt. Charles W. Cates and Mrs. Sue Cates, part of the Pioneer Cates family of North Vancouver. She is survived by her two sisters - Janet Fox (Stanley) of Victoria and Catherine Halliday of Quesnel, as well as six nieces and nephews, and 5 great nieces and nephews. Born in 1933 and raised in North Vancouver, Suzanne learned to play the piano (and read music!) before she was old enough for school.
She accompanied the singing of her classmates from grade one in Queen Mary to grade 12 in North Van High. After graduating from UBC with a BA, Suzanne decided to attend UBC library school, and went on to achieve her degree in library science. She accepted a position in the UBC library and worked there until she retired. She and Earl had a wonderful life of travel and adventure especially in the Scandinavian countries. They studied Norwegian in order to maximize the enjoyment of their travels.
Suzanne was very aware of her maritime heritage as a Cates and one of her most notable achievements was the purchase and reconstruction of the power launch "Gaviota" built in 1913 and known as the Charles H. Cates III - re launched in 1994. She and Earl became proud members of the Burrard Yacht Club and took part in many a sail - past. Exploring the wilderness played a large part in Suzanne and Earl's leisure time. Their garden was a most unusual collection of rhododendrons and other plants native to British Columbia. Heaven help you if you referred to them by anything other than their latin names! Suzanne also had a special fondness for all animals and birds. Cats were always present in the Dodson household -- the current ones are two siblings that she always referred to as "the guys".
During the last years of her life, Suzanne faced many challenging health problems and we would like to give a special thank you to the loyal group of friends who made sure she was never lonely. A special note of thanks to sister Catherine who came down form Quesnel for almost a year to make sure Suzanne was well cared for. Her last months were also made more bearable by the devoted care shown her by the staff of Sunrise Lynn Valley. Many thanks too for the compassionate care she received in Lion's Gate Hospital. Dr's Byman, Davidson, and the staff of 4 East. At Suzanne's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lion's Gate Hospital or the charity of your choice. For those wishing to share a memory of Suzanne, please go to:
