Hello gaolbird! I won't let it be known that I associate with the criminal element. I have my reputation to consider don't you know! Gayle also lays claim to criminal elements in her family on the Tempest side. Her Aunt, who lived in Ottawa and died some years ago, spent a long time tracing the Tempest family tree. Although she preferred to refer to it as tracing the pedigree of the Tempests. She found that one ancestor, namely Nicholas of Bashall, was prisoner in the Tower of London and was hanged, drawn and quartered in 1537 for participation in the Pilgrimage of Grace, which I believe has something to do with protesting against Henry VIII's break with the Roman Catholic Church! Had I known this before. I married Gayle I may have thought twice about joining the family!
Gayle is doing her collecting today for the Marie Cury cancer nurses so I am catching up on emails etc. We had a very enjoyable evening with the Cothey's on Saturday. Went for an early dinner at a nice restaurant called Saffron in Truro and then to The Hall for Cornwall to listen to The Band of the Royal Airforce. Great evening of big band era classics and a sing a long at the end of the performance. They both send their regards to you all.
I needed some plants for the garden so we drove to Duchy Plant Centre near Lostwithial, part of the Duchy of Cornwall Estate. They have a wonderful selection of plant material and it's beautifully kept. Had a coffee in the restaurant there then walked cross country to Lanhydrock to look at the Spring flowers in the grounds. It's about an hours walk each way through fields and woodland.
Since we have just gone through the lambing season the field were full of sheep and their babies. I spoiled the whole image for Gayle when I announced that many of these lovely fluffy Animals will be on someone's table in the coming weeks! Since you are now familiar with Lanhydrock I have attached some photos of the wonderful Magnolias and Camelias in flower there. We had the gardens pretty much to ourselves since the house doesn't open until April 1st and there are very few visitors here at the moment. While there I popped into the National Trust shop and found the last bottle of the 2012 Camel Valley Bacchus which I snapped up. The 2011 vintage is readily available but the 2012 is completely sold out and was by far the best. My wine club just sent a case of 12 reds which, hopefully, I should receive today or tomorrow. Looking forward to see what surprises are in store.
Looking at maybe a long weekend in Barcelona late next month of early
May. Researching some hotels around Las Ramblas and local flights. I
think we can fly from Exeter which is only a little over an hour away.Spoke to Krissy last evening. They plan on starting Piggie mid April. They have been given a lot of farmers markets this year at Trout Lake, Kitts and West End. These are always popular and they usually sell out as these events. Believe she is now looking for someone to work in the kitchen on prep work.
Spud just vacated our bedroom and has his nose in the food trough so I will now go and remove his fur from my pillow and make the bed.
Incidentally, is the offer still on the table to use the adjoining flat? Krissy may have a waif and stray staying at their place in September for part of the time we are there. Don't worry about it if you have already booked it out! Krissy said she would make other arrangements for her 'guest' All the best Hi Prunisto!
From tracking record, I gather UPS delivered your passport last Friday. Trust this is the case. Weather here is starting to pretend it is Spring. Anyway, I'm up for another ride with Whirlissimo shortly so must away. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Pics: Some shots of the city yesterday afternoon. Taken when I walked back from an interview, (conducted by a consultant on behalf of VIWF, having to do with fund raising, etc.), near Cambie and 7th and one of first blooms, off our patio.
Hi Patrick, Great photos of Vancouver. Yes, I confirm receipt of the passport, thanks again. All is ready for my great China sojourn. Weather here is also fantastic and spring-like. I battled wind on the golf course yesterday, fairly successfully although I have to admit I don't have the same power as in my youth. Cunning is of some help. Today building a support system for my blackberries, hauling the last of prunings to the landfill and picking up a pickup load of compost for the grapes while at the landfill. Cheers, Peter
Hello Palla da Golf Petros!
Sitting here, sipping on some Panama Red, reflecting on just how wonderful life happens to be. Glad you received your passport. I was a bit worried that the Russian mob guy I gave it to for a couple of hours, (Needed cash for malt replacement so knew you wouldn't mind!), and who actually couried it from UPS, might not have kept his word. Glad to see he did. You'll be happy to know, I'm sure, that he assured me that you wouldn't be on the No Fly List so enjoy your trip to China!
[Pics of Alejando in the LA Marathon, this past Sunday!]
Blessed with another gorgeous day today, although certainly not as gorgeous as either your gorgeous wife of your Narmata weather. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Pic: Buds are showing so it won't be long now!
Hi Pat, We got your phone message on the weekend, thanks. I didn't get out for a ride on the weekend, was nursing a cold. I wasn't sick enough to feel really badly so I was able to read a book and a half!! (The Weird Sisters and 1/2 of American Wife).
I'll swing by one day soon to take that empty cake-pan-ring off your hands but will call/email first.
Dermot and Jake and I saw the coolest thing last night! It is the net sculpture outside of the Convention Centre where the TED Talk event is going on. I highly recommend taking a look. See it at night (before Saturday) as it involves projected colour and patterns. Ciao! Sara
Hello Sara Jane! So sorry to hear about your cold but it seems you are putting your recovery to good use. Thanks for tip on sculpture. We plan to go and see it one night this week.
You might not have noticed, immersed as you were in Weird Wife, ([Collapsed book titles to save space!!!] Aren't all wives weird?), but a relatively dry, if overcast, window of opportunity presented itself just after 3:00 pm on Sunday. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Stats for today's ride:

Hi Ian! You sound pretty busy! Did buy tickets for Nymphomaniac I & II for Sunday, first screening at 2:10 pm. Going with three other friends. Anyway, I'm sure our celluloid paths will cross at some point, in the not too, too distant future, I trust. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Glasgow! I guess the retirement countdown has really started: 10, 9, 8...........................!!!! Blastoff!!!!!!!!!!
As soon as I read your last message I realized that I knew, but had forgotten, that Sir Andrew was on safari. Mike Carter had mentioned it last time we played bridge together. Mike and Polly are just back, themselves, from Palm Springs and we are playing bridge tomorrow evening with Whirylgig and Fast Eddy McCorkle, another VRC brigand. Cheers, Patrizzio! almost there
Not only an Infamous Flake BUT a Goalbird as well! Always knew that there was a Devil Woman lurking behind/under that Goodie-Two-Shoes demeanour, just waiting to bust out! Thanks for thinking of me regarding the fridge magnets! You can never have too many. Please go back to the Thrift Store and buy them back with the money you make on the blue bike!!!! I notice, as well, that all the clothes, shoes, hats, etc., you have donated, Santa Maria, all belonged to Hapless Heraldo. Easy to be generous with other people's possessions, isn't it, Ms Hypocrite!!!
Blessed with another gorgeous day today, so arranged to ride with Giggenheimer once again. We met at Point Grey and McDonald and set out for UBC, intending to go to Iona. Not as much heavy truck traffic on Marine, once past campus, so was pleased about that. Once we were over Arthur Laing considerable wind was at our backs so we breezed along, knowing full well, however, that we would be paying for it on return leg. In fact, it wasn't as bad as anticipated as we were able to ameliorate the worst of it by drafting, one behind the other, switching places every so often, basically almost all the way to River Rock Casino.
Once we were on the Cambie SkyTrain Bridge we were sheltered from the worst of the savage easterly. Climbing Heather was almost fun as were were protected until we turned on 37th and then we had a tail wind. Giorgio had to be home by 12:30 pm so we said goodbye at Pine and I continued out to UBC.
Unlike yesterday, the extra distance was appealing as I knew I have help, the strong, strong wind pushing me along. Did a few dipsy-doodles around campus to give me 71 km by the time I was at the bottom of the Foreshore Hill. I had decided, earlier, that I'd shoot for a 100 km ride so I knew that all I had to do, once back at The Heartbreak Terrace, was ride to Stanley Park and back and I would have achieved my goal.
My legs felt pretty good as headed east on Lamey's Mill Road so I started thinking about upping distance once I reached SP. In the end I completed two Prospect Point Loops and a number of shorter loops, basically around Lost Lagoon, to give me 131 km on the clock by the time I left Second Beach behind and was making for home. In fact, I think I felt stronger towards the end of the ride than I did as I left UBC. Probably had to do with the thought that I would be bucking the forceful headwind all the way home. Anyway, felt pretty pleased that I'd managed to equal the Penticton Gran Fondo distance by the time I was back at The Islay Inn. Stats for ride: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/463618344#.UyjcMxuSDUM.email
Must away as I have two, nubile, Swedish masseuses coming over shortly to give me a full body rub. What's a poor lad to do when his wife is always out at volunteer meetings of an evening? But to more important matters, when are you two Hinterlanders going to visit civilization? Let us know as we'd love to have dinner at your magnificent pad again. The view, the vino, the victuals, why bother eating at home, says Cora Lee! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hello again, Gang of Four! Glad trip continues to be so interesting and exciting. How is the Saigon Sauna? What wonderful news regarding Will! I gather he must have submitted his thesis. Please pass long our congratulations! Bravo!!! When are you two Jet Setters going to be available for bridge? Let us know when you have recovered from re-entry as we'd love to have you over for dinner and hear all your travel stories! Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hello Upstanding Citizen Seymour and Ms Tempestuous Tempest!
It's a wonder Gayle wasn't transported to Australia given her chequered family background! No doubt, the real reason for changing her name after marriage!!!
Great snapolas. Gudrun looks well as does Stefano's glass holding hand! Your
Spring seems far more advanced than ours. Think that half of the case of wine club wine belongs to me since you pocketed my Siansbury's credit! Barcelona sounds more than wonderful. Drink plenty of Priorat! Great news about markets for Piglet and Co. Miss Maggie whenever I make bed as I used to have to do it around her or risk a slash! Spud, of course, if far more pleasant and tolerant. Not quite sure of the booking at The Annexe for September, (Flamin' and Sarge has asked Rosita and Dusty about a friend staying but not yet confirmed. My bet is that it will be free.), but we'd love you to stay with us anyway. That way we can see more of each other, not that we wouldn't, even if you were next door. Anyway, will confirm reservation as soon as I've told Flamin' that we need to know, one way or another. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Poppa, Lisa found my black shawl! I am forwarding our exchange below in case you find yourself up near her place and can retrieve it for me! Her email is LVOGT@MCCARTHY.CA
I went to see The Grand Budapest Hotel with Pierre on Saturday and found it quite entertaining…Wes Anderson’s best work since The Royal Tannenbaums, in my humble opinion.
Chloe, would you be able to pick me up in Bellingham on Friday, August 22 at 7pm and take the ferry to Nanaimo with me for the weekend to Tofino? We could stay Sat and Sun as guests of the Vogts in a beach cottage and then come back to Vancouver on Monday and I would leave from Bellingham, Wednesday the 27th. I could take a shuttle to Bellingham if needed on Wednesday. Love to all! Ayn
Hi Humble Tinsel Town Film Critic! Glad your shawl surfaced. I'll send Lisa a message and see when it might be convenient to pop by. With repsect to Tofino, are we invited? Just checking as if so we'll need to plan return from Falcon to be back in time. We can do it but wouldn't do so if not included and/or you are happy to have just you Chloë. We'd both enjoy the weekend but it really is more important to consider what you'd like. No big deal but just want to be "sensitive"! To more important matters! Fondestos, Love and Cheers, Cocoa Butter Poppa!
Hello! Yes we are invited to Tofino...the estate of Dr Erich Vogt is treating us to a one bedroom beach-front condo that sleeps 4. You and Mum could have the bedroom and me and Chloe will have a pull-out bed...dates are Aug 23-26 but we could go Sat and Sun and travel back Monday for Chloe and so I can fly home Wed the 28
Oops...hit send accidentally! I would love if we all returned to that area together though so let me know! Love to all! Xoxo These are great shots of the city! You should go into tourism for Vancouver!
Hi Itchy Trigger Finger Gal!
I supposed/presumed what you confirmed to be the case, from what you had mentioned on phone earlier, but I just wanted to make sure I understood correctly. I, too, think it would be wonderful if we had our own reunion, (as part of Vogt gathering, of course), so to speak, there, especially since Barbara and Erich were part of first visit as well. How fitting!
Glad you enjoyed snapolas. I was just so taken with the incredible cityscape, sailboats and tall buildings and mountains peaking through, that I wanted to say, "This is where we live, Uncle George, (He always tries to convince us to move back to Manitoba whenever we visit.), and why we will probably not move back to Winnipeg!" You know what I mean, I'm sure. Love, Dad!
I think this will work, i will make it work! xx
That’s great! It will be the first time the four of us return to OUR honeymoon spot! We’ll have to make Shirley Temples while we’re there! I drank at least a dozen of them in ’76!
It's a date. Xx Wonderful!
Why don't we aim for meeting at 1:45 on Sunday in case it is packed out.
I'm assuming you have a print out which constitutes our tickets and
your presence is necessary for our admittance. Thanks again for the coordination....Paul Hi Paolo! I'll be there at 1:45 pm so see you there then. I'll let Kjell know about meeting at 1:45 pm. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hello gents, I will try to get work off that evening but worst come to worst I will swing by later in the evening (around 915p) to see if anyone needs to be sent to the sin bin for excessive drinking. Hopefully, this is ok with you Pat? Unless the meeting is long over by that time Best, VL
Hello Vittorious, et al! Of course your tardy arrival is fine with me, Vittorino. More money for the piglet. If the Puritans have headed home by 9:30 pm, Whirlissimo, Nicotine Feller and I, will certainly still be imbibing, counting fines and laughing all the way to the malt cabinet! Cheers, Patrzzio!
P, another good jaunt today, thanks. I hope your Garmin ate up the requisite kilometres and the wind was a little more kind to you. Forecast suggests we might get a break from the rain in the afternoon tomorrow. I may be able to get out for a ride if I can catch the MT and tie her up. W
Hi Giggage! Once again, thanks for the ride and the fabulous drafting! Speaking of which, hope there is some draft beet tomorrow evening, as well as some Iona Brown! Forecast shows another "window" between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm so I'm game. Let me know in the morning. Cheers, Cocoa Butter Patrizzio!
Well ,wasn't that a pleasant surprise hearing from you. We were away at our cabin for an extended long weekend just returning home today. We would love to pop by and pick your brain about France. We are often in the "hood " as David"s mother is held captive at the Broadway Pentecostal Care Home. We will definitely call in advance . We could even meet you for coffee on the island if that works. Will be in touch, Gayle (not feeling like a principessa today as I slog through laundry and unpacking food coolers)
Hi Put-Upon Principessa!
Where are the bloody servants when you need them? Still at the cabin, nekkid in the hot tub, drinking all your booze? Where is your getaway? Nice life indeed!!! Give us a shout/email when you know about next visit to Broadway Pentothal! Come here and have java or something stronger! Never mind about Granville Island. Life is too, too short and GI is for the tourists not loco locals. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi PUP! Sorry, I realized I neglected to attach snap! Cheers, Il Conduttore!
Thank you so much, Pat. Seats wouldn't be a problem since you have the tickets already. See you Friday, looking forward to it, Kjell
Hi Kjell! Had a message, earlier today, from Paolo and he's like to meet at 1:45 pm so we'll do just that. If you are not there then we'll save a seat for you. Must away as I have two, nubile, Swedish masseuses coming over shortly to give me a full body rub to ease my aching muscles. What's a poor lad to do when his wife is always out at volunteer meetings of an evening? Life is too, too short not to drink single malt when having your calves stroked! See you Friday and Sunday! Cheers, Cocoa Butter Patrizzio!
Sir Dunn, Thank you for another long email - you must be a very fast typer. Vancouver really is a gorgeous place as shown in your photos. We are still fighting spring as there was snow this morning but the birds are returning and we had a woodpecker pecking at one of our trees yesterday. Are you getting more involved in the VIFF with interviews etc.? We saw a couple of pictures last year and thoroughly enjoyed them and wished we could have seen more.
We look forward to visits in April when we are in Vancouver. Expected to arrive around the 6th as we are going to a fund raiser for UNBC with Chris Hadfield as the guest speaker on the 5th.. I think I already told you that so my apologies for repeating myself. Anyway talk to you in person soon. Cheers, Dawn
Hi Myopic Maria! I was quite touched that you would call, even though you reversed the charges, until I read your latest and noticed that you obviously don't bother to read my emails closely or thoroughly!
(Can't understand why. You are not alone in this, I'm sorry to say. Of course, a genius is always ahead of his time!!!) Vancouver International Writers Festival, Duhlink, not the Vancouver international Film Fesival, although I volunteer at both.
I believe Chris Hadfield is a TED speaker as well. We plan to visit Canada Place one night this week to see the impressive LED sculpture there.
I trust you will pencil your poor friends in your social calendar, in early April, when you flounce into town! Fondestos and Cheers, Fingers Flying Over the Keys, Patrizzio!
