Horseshoe Bay/UBC Blues or Bust: Wednesday, March 12th

In order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: they must be fit for it; they must not do too much of it; and they must have a sense of success in it. -John Ruskin, author, art critic, and social reformer (1819-1900)

Hello gentlemen, once again, thank you for coming and my apologies for not being able to provide maltage of the kind that we're all used to, but either way, it was still a pleasure and honour to have all of you there (even Kurt and his appetite). I warned my aunt and uncle that they will likely see this motley crew again in a few months - maybe by then your plastic cover will have shown up Pat? I'm partial to April 13th if that is ok with everyone Take care, VL
Hello Victorious, Giani et al:
In fact, the plastic cover for the wine pourers did turn up. I guess I had placed it inside my copy of Umbrella and I found it yesterday when I opened the book to read a passage! Sorry for the fussage at the restaurant.

With respect for next NRBC gathering, April 6th is best for me as following Sunday, April 13th, is last one before Cora Lee's parents return to Winnipeg and we are having a farewell dinner with friends and family. Perhaps after Easter might be a possibility as by then the voracious appetite of Kurtasaurus Wrathfeldica may have been dampened by copious amounts of nicotine infused Easter chocolate.

Until we hear from his Omnipotent Self, Whirlygig, Secretary, pro tem, I remain, basquing in the sunshine of cycling Paradise, Il Conduttore!

P, thanks for the pics. Sorry, cannot play cards tonight. Both Ed and I play league tonight. Thursday is out for me but I can ask Ed if you want. W

Hi Giggster! Glad you enjoyed snapolas. Going to go ahead with tonight so you might discuss with Fast Eddy best evening next week. I'm planning to ride to Horseshoe Bay this morning. Looks like another gorgeous day. Talk soon. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

P, have a good ride to HB. Looks gorgeous out there. I will speak to Ed about bridge next week. We both have league in the offing but will see who else steps up. W

Hello All:

Will be sending pictures of last weekend, over next little while, but my friend, Sara, still at the UBC Library, forwarded this link:

This newsletter contains information from cIRcle about Erich Vogt.

Hi Lori, Rick and Paul:

Quite remarkable to see everyone this past weekend, although a sad/bittersweet occasion, of course. Was a pleasure meeting you, Paul, and I certainly trust we'll be able to arrange something when in Winnipeg/Falcon this August.
Have attached some pictures of last weekend.
All the best. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi again, everyone!

Few more snaps. Please send any along to people for whom I don't have email addresses, should you feel they might want them. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!

beautiful!! All the best Vogts will be Vogts Livingstone
Thank you for sharing these and for the great weekend and border run!!!

Hi California Cousins!

Glad everyone enjoyed snaps. On another matter, did you find out about your shawl, Ayn? We still have sympathy card here so we could collect it when we drop it off. AS well, did you take all the programs for service? I'd like one but perhaps I can get one from Lisa. Anyway, Love and Cheers, Dad/Patrizzio!

Hi Patrick, Yes, it was meant to be prunings.  I depend on iPhone to correct my typing so blame the late St. Steve Jobs. Thanks again for visa pickup. Sorry for vague directions to UPS (I couldn't actually remember where I'd seen their sign but thought it was close).  Sorry about shortfall of $s for payment - I don't remember how much I gave you, please let me know how much I owe and I'll make it up when you get here at month end.

I finished the raking yesterday - that was quite a workout.  I'm just home from a very windy golf game.  Prunings shown on the attached. Cheers, Peter

Hello Jugos de Ciruela!

Have you started expanding upon your original line of juices? I guess you are looking at the geriatric demographic. Good market ploy!

No big deal about shortfall, I'll just bill you for a very, very expensive malt! You left $125 so $20 should buy me quite a nice bottle, don't you think?

Clarisse, Dusty and I played bridge with Sarge downstairs this evening. Fairly close but Rosita and I took two rubbers, one slow, last quick, to their quick one. Admiral Barnacle and Giggster were both at VRC, former using gym, latter playing doubles with Fast Eddy.

I'd like to be your Canadian distributor for your line of natural fruit juices I think I can get your tetra paks into the RCMP so we'd have national distribution. Once we payoff Sarge, we'll be rollin' in dough! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

If you have either his home or cell # can you pass it along to me, his birthday at the end of March and I usually give him a dingle on that day! Ginette

Hi Ginette: Number I have is for his cell. Trust you are both well. We are off to Naramata on March 28th, for the weekend, to celebrate a friend's birthday. Will here be anyone at Intersection that weekend? I see winery is open by appointment only in March. If so, let me know as we'd like to pop by, at some point. Cheers, Patrizzio. Hello Zircon!

How wonderful to hear from you! Delighted you are coming to Vancouver BUT, as you surmised, we are off again, this time to Mexico, a destination wedding for Nicolina/Marvinator, Flamin's'/Sarge's youngest, in Playa del Carmen, on April 30th! We are back on May 7th. Any chance you can plan to arrive a day or so before the 29th as we certainly wish to see you/catch up. If not, please plan to come for dinner, even stay the night, on April 29th. We will be leaving quite early on the 30th but you are more than welcome to stay as long as you would like. Not sure how long you plan to be on the coast but perhaps after we return, if you are still around. Anyway, let us know and we'll plan accordingly.

Been quite busy of late and this past weekend is a good example. Ayn flew to Bellingham on Friday and Chloë picked her up. She was up to attend Erich Vogt's memorial service. His brother, John, was her biological father, and Erich was, in fact, the Kind, Loving Uncle, in her life. At any rate, on Saturday, the four of us went to the moving, fitting service and were also invited to the family dinner afterwards. It was quite remarkable to see so many of the Vogts, many we have known for almost forty years, although a sad/bittersweet occasion, of course. I also had a chance to meet people I'd only heard about and certainly hope we'll be able to arrange another gathering when in Winnipeg/Falcon this August, to celebrate Rosita's/Coat Hanger's 69th wedding anniversary, as many of Ayn's cousins would like to meet Pierrino and Alejandro as well.

We will be driving west towards the last week in July so wondering if you will be at home  or jet-setting as well! If gone, please leave key under doormat as we are used to staying in people's homes when they are not there! Always liked Goldilocks' attitude!!!

Have been playing a fair bit of bridge, of late. On Sunday, some of my cycling/Book Club/squash friends had a table, (The Sisterhood were preparing for a party to which Chloë had invited quite a few of her friends who knew Ayn.), and I was granted permission to play with Admiral Barnacle, Captain Kirk, (from Nanaimo), and Whirlygig, at his place. Must say that I had all the cards and won with each partner so I was overall winner. However, pleased to report that Ragin' played very, very well and made, among other contracts, quite a difficult 5 Diamonds, with me, doubled, (vulnerable!), by Kirk, grasping at straws! Great good fun although Krabby Kirk was rather put out as he feels, not quite sure why, that he is the better player of us all. Untenable position for him as he has been lowest on score totem pole last few times!

With the improved weather I have been able to enjoy some wonderful rides. Today had the longest outing since before Christmas so was pleased as punch. Left about 10:15 am and made for Stanley Park. Took a shot detour along Spirit Trail into North Van and then headed out to Horseshoe Bay. Had 50 km on the clock when I reached Ferryville and then retraced the route. Back at Granville Island I had 85 km on the clock so headed out along Spanish Banks to UBC. Dipsy-doodled around campus in order to up my distance as I wanted to have 120 km on the odometre when back home. Did just that and was very, verypleased. Stats for ride:

Mme Coriandre was at meetings, meetings, meetings, all day and this evening as well. Must away as Clarisse and Dusty and I are playing bridge with Sarge downstairs. Branco and Eduardo are both afraid to show up after I was overall winner on Sunday! Let us know what you think about what I suggested and we'll plan accordingly. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Lads, on both sides of the Atlantic, (and The Sisterhood)!

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!!!

Bucked a pretty steady head/cross wind for much of ride so was a tad disappointed that AVG wasn't higher but consoled myself with Whistler Gran Fondo distance. Mme Coriandre was at meetings, meetings, meetings, all day and this evening as well. Clarisse, Dusty and I played bridge with Sarge downstairs for a couple of hours this evening. Fairly close but Rosita and I took two rubbers, one slow, last quick, to their quick one.

On another matter, Derek, I bumped into a friend, David Balzarini, a retired physics prof at UBC, this past Saturday. He had just returned from England a few days earlier. He was a judge at the World Pasty Championships, held at the Eden Project on Saturday 1 March, the Saturday before the national day of Cornwall, St Piran’s Day, I gather. David was a judge, no less! Quite surprised, I asked him how he came to be an expert on pasties. He replied that he had come across notice of the Championships about four years ago and sent a message to organizers asking for a poster. He runs a small travel agency, out of his home, now that he is retired, and said he would publicize event for any customers heading to England.

With his message he also included the fact that since he was from northern Michigan he ate pasties almost evrey day as a child! I gather the Cornish miners who emigrated to work in the copper and iron mines there introduced the food! He has been a judge for past three years. He has to pay for his own airfare but he says it is quite a lark so a most enjoyable time! I plan to apply for next year!!!!!

You might pass the following along to Stefano as I learned, from Wikipedia:

Large numbers of Cornish people moved to the United States, and while some stayed in New York City and other East Coast ports after arriving, many moved inland to mining areas in California, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan. One such area was Mineral Point, Wisconsin, in which the largest group of immigrants were Cornish miners attracted to the lead mining opportunities, and by 1845 roughly half of the town's population had Cornish ancestry. Today the Cornish town of Redruth is twinned with Mineral Point.

For those of you who don't know Stefano, his son, Mark, is married to Krissy, Derek's youngest daughter. Stefano and Gudrun live in Redruth, not all that far from Blackwater, where we inhabited Sydney House for all of August. If you want to sell your house there you need to have an engineering report commissioned to determine if it is likely to collapse into the ground, such is the beehive of tunnels and shafts beneath the town, and elsewhere in the county, left over from the tin mining industry! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: Assembled gang on Sunday afternoon, to visit with Ayn; The Sisterhood, just Grandmothers and Mothers: Joanne, Ayn, Cora Lee, Katie, Maya, Beckster! The Brotherhood, David, Maya's fiancée, and Lucca, Katie's son; Patrizzio howling! Cora Lee's salmon; Rosita's baked beans!

Hello Glasgow and Catherine!

Much to my shock, horror and dismay, I suddenly realized that we'd not thanked you for the simply wonderful evening out! No excuses but plenty of reasons!!! Again, I do apologize, especially since it was such a grand, fun-filled time, catching-up. Free wine wasn't bad either!

At any rate, Ayn arrived last Friday and it was a whirlwind weekend with her Uncle Erich's memorial on Saturday, a gathering at our place, on Sunday, for friends who wished to see her, and then drive to Bellingham on Monday for her flight back to LA. Of course, I did manage a few rides but today's was the winner so there is a special edition. Again, many, many thanks, Glasgow. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Kjell! Trust you are fully recovered by now. Sorry you were not able to join me for The Great Flood as I thoroughly enjoyed it. The archival footage was remarkbale and Bill Frisell's bluesy-jazzy soundtrack was simply astounding, haunting beyond belief and perfectly matched to images of incredible devastation. Cheers, Patrizzio!
